Lo studio del “problema mente-corpo” (cui è dedicato un intero settore della filosofia: la filosofia della mente) è uno dei problemi più importanti e indagati della nostra epoca poiché, in sostanza, è il problema della natura stessa e quindi anche del destino di ogni essere umano. Nel discutere di tale problema non ne va della struttura dell’atomo o della realtà dei numeri, ma ne va di noi stessi. Gli stati mentali sono riducibili a stati fisici? Ci sono differenze essenziali fra la mente e la natura e, se sì, quali sono? Possiamo rispondere a tali domande o ci scontriamo con limiti cognitivi insuperabili? Di fronte alle difficoltà poste dal problema mente-corpo, oggigiorno si possono assumere due atteggiamenti: quello degli ottimisti, i quali ritengono che il problema derivi dall’attuale stato delle conoscenze ma che un giorno, con il progresso della scienza, potrà ricevere una risposta soddisfacente, e quello dei pessimisti o meglio dei “misteriani” come amano definirsi, per i quali il rapporto mente-corpo non è un problema ma un mistero, destinato perciò a rimanere per sempre irresolubile. L’atteggiamento ottimista può essere esemplificato da Crick (scopritore, insieme a Watson, della catena del DNA) che nell’ultima parte della sua vita ha proposto di avviare un programma scientifico di ricerca per lo studio della coscienza, mentre la posizione dei misteriani è invece autorevolmente rappresentata da McGinn, secondo cui il problema mente-corpo rappresenta un vero e proprio limite cognitivo della specie umana, un problema la cui soluzione va al di là delle capacità intellettive umane, più o meno come l’algebra va al di là delle capacità cognitive dei criceti.

This issue of the 'philosophy of the city' includes articles by scholars on a range of human sciences, from media theory to aesthetics and architectural theory. Philosophy, social ontology, cultural anthropology, aesthetics, digital hermeneutics, media theory, cognitive science: these are just some of the disciplines that contribute to the philosophy of the city. This variety of approaches doesn't necessarily result in a chaotic mix. Many of the included forms of discourse belong to the same episteme, which means there are many connections and overlaps. This is true both in the literatures of reference and in the ways of answering the question of what 'the city' is. Secondly, the texts don't focus on the city itself, but on those who live in, design, imagine and think about it. Thirdly, because these texts create a place where different ideas can live together. This is like a city, where ideas change, are built on and then rebuilt. This is what Wittgenstein wrote about in his Philosophical Investigations.
