Il ponte sul Marecchia, la cui costruzione iniziò nel 14 d.C. sotto Augusto per poi essere terminata nel 21 d.C. dall’imperatore Tiberio, ha segnato 2000 anni di storia della città di Rimini. La realizzazione di un ponte monumentale in un settore strategico per la viabilità antica e per l’accesso in città ha permesso non solo di superare un ostacolo idrografico, il fiume Ariminus, ma anche di facilitare spostamenti, collegamenti, scambi, commerci nonché rapporti tra popoli. Del resto la sua importanza strategica è evidenziata dai tentavi di distruzione cui fu sottoposto, che segnano fasi storiche di criticità per Rimini: nel 552 quando il generale goto Usdrila distrusse il ponte per fermare il generale bizantino Narsete; nel 1528 quando Pandolfo Malatesta tentò di incendiarlo; infine durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, quando sopravvisse ad un tentativo di distruzione dei Tedeschi. Il ponte, oltre ad aver rappresentato nelle diverse epoche un simbolo dell’entrata nel centro cittadino, riunisce in sé numerosi aspetti che partendo dall’archeologia e dall’architettura, attraversano settori come quello paesaggistico, artistico, epigrafico, figurativo e non solo. È così che lo studio e la ricerca sul Ponte di Augusto e Tiberio richiedono un’analisi dei suoi numerosi aspetti e delle sue diverse letture, con l’obiettivo di creare una visione globale che metta in luce le sue interrelazioni con la storia, con i popoli e in generale con il ricco patrimonio culturale riminese. Le attività di conoscenza e di valorizzazione incentrate sul ponte non possono infatti non tenere conto dei vari elementi che lo caratterizzano. Così risultano di fondamentale importanza per l’archeologia i dati recuperati dagli scavi condotti tra il 1989 e il 1991 e dai recenti sondaggi conoscitivi del 2022; per le arti in genere ha costituito un elemento di analisi e di riproduzione, tra cui si cita la raffigurazione del ponte nella formella del Cancro di Agostino di Duccio, all’interno del Tempio Malatestiano; per l’architettura sicuramente importante lo studio dei restauri del ponte, così come la fortuna che ebbe tra gli architetti. Primo fra tutti si cita Andrea Palladio che nel 1570 nei Quattro libri dell’Architettura scrisse «quanti ponti se siano veduti da ogn’un pare il più bello e il più degno di consideratione, sì per la fortezza, come per il suo compartimento, …». Il volume dedicato interamente alla monumentalità del ponte si suddivide in due parti, l’una dedicata al “ritratto del ponte” che tra aspetti archeologici, architettonici, epigrafici e figurativi cerca di rappresentarne l’unicità; l’altra parte permette di ampliare lo sguardo su quanto le pietre della struttura possano raccontare, tra passato e presente, raccordando diverse ricerche e racconti. Il progetto editoriale diventa in questo modo un progetto di valorizzazione di uno dei luoghi simbolo della romanità di Rimini, che presenta le riflessioni sul monumento, attraversando diversi filoni di ricerca, dando valore al patrimonio culturale e alla sua potenzialità, migliorandone di conseguenza la conoscenza collettiva. Il volume è arricchito dalla collaborazione di diverse Istituzioni, Enti e studiosi, che mettendo insieme le loro diverse professionalità hanno dato vita ad una visione globale e multisfaccettata del ponte, monumento-simbolo della città di Rimini insieme all’Arco di Augusto.
