«Incominciai a pensare che era giunto il momento di stabilire con me stesso a quali condizioni avrei accettato l'ingaggio per il viaggio. Ero già al corrente del fatto che nella baleniera non pagano salario, ma tutto il personale, compreso il capitano, riceve alcune quote dei profitti, chiamate pertinenze; queste pertinenze sono proporzionate al grado di importanza dei rispettivi compiti. Sapevo anche che, essendo novellino della baleniera, la mia pertinenza non sarebbe stata troppo grande; ma, dato che ero abituato al mare, che potevo governare una nave, impiombare una gomena e tutto il resto, non avevo alcun dubbio che, da tutto quanto avevo udito, mi sarebbe stata offerta la 257esima pertinenza e cioè la 257esima parte dei proventi netti del viaggio, a qualunque cifra potessero ammontare.» Herman Melville in Moby Dick immagina che nel Pequod, la baleniera comandata dal capitano Achab, viga un sistema che non discrimina, perché ciò che conta è il merito individuale, e che assegni a ciascun lavoratore-capitalista una «pertinenza», un salario, basato sulle competenze individuali e sui profitti, cosicché a tutti convenga che il capitale frutti il più possibile. È un sistema simile che in queste pagine Renato Brunetta propone anche per il nostro Paese per superare la crisi, «una grande occasione per ristrutturare, per soffermarsi a capire il mondo e le sue trasformazioni, e reinterpretare idee e teorie»: una riforma radicale che preveda il passaggio da una società a retribuzione fissa verso sistemi di partecipazione dei lavoratori ai rischi d'impresa. Solo così, realizzando un «socialismo liberale» dove il salario non sarà più una variabile fissa e incomprimibile, si potrà compiere la transizione da un mondo di salariati in perenne bilico sul nulla della disoccupazione a un pianeta della piena occupazione. «Facciamo respirare la nostra società, i nostri giovani. Sviluppiamo. Investiamo. Facciamo manutenzione del nostro territorio, delle nostre case, del nostro patrimonio urbano. Restauriamo e ristrutturiamo. Modernizziamo. Costruiamo le reti del nostro futuro. Togliamo la gente dalle scrivanie della pigrizia statale. Aggiusteremo la rotta in mare aperto. ... Non abbandoniamoci alla marea del pensiero unico e meschino. Decidiamo. Certo, per scegliere bene occorre conoscere. Ma anche immaginare con coraggio. Vedere più in là. Questa è l'utopia positiva.»

In the twentieth century there were two great political and social paradigms, the liberal-democratic and the libertarian (in its various socialist, anarchist, and communist delineations). The central idea of the first approach is isonomy: the exclusion of any discrimination on the basis that legal rights are afforded equally to all people. The central idea of the second approach is rather to acknowledge and address a broader spectrum of known inequalities. Such an approach, Bellanca argues, allows the pursuit of pluralism as well as a more realistic and complex view of what equality is. Here he analyzes the main economic and political institutions of an isocratic society, and in so doing, effectively outlines how a utopian society can be structurally and anthropologically realized. This book is ideal reading for an audience interested in the critique of contemporary capitalism through a renewed perspective of democratic socialism and leftist libertarianism. Nicolò Bellanca is Associate Professor of Development Economics at the University of Florence, Italy. He is the author of a broad array of scholarly articles, books and textbooks about both the history of economic thought and development economics. His current research focuses on the theory of institutional change.

Entrambe le attrici vinsero l’Oscar per la loro toccante interpretazione. In Italia, la vicenda venne trasposta in un film-tv, interpretato da Anna Proclemer e dalla undicenne Ottavia Piccolo. Il celebre dramma The Miracle Worker di William Gibson, tradotto in italiano in Anna dei miracoli, venne messo in scena per la prima volta nel 1975 negli Stati Uniti.
