Les enfants issus de l'immigration maghrébine et vivant en France aujourd'hui sont porteurs, à des degrés divers, de la culture d'origine de leurs familles. Cependant ils adhèrent aux normes culturelles de la société française dans laquelle ils partagent les préoccupations de leurs pairs. Comment, à partir d'éléments souvent contradictoires, en tout cas différents, ces enfants construisent-ils leur identité culturelle ? Quels sont les aménagements nécessaires pour se forger une représentation de soi satisfaisante ? Comment faire de l'un à partir du multiple ? Quelles sont, au cours des années qui les mènent de l'âge de raison à l'adolescence, les constantes et les évolutions de leur discours, à la fois expression et support de leur construction identitaire ? Les préadolescents d'aujourd'hui, d'autre part, ont-il de leur identité la même perception que celle qu'avaient des jeunes du même âge il y a quinze ans ? Qu'est-ce qui se maintient, qu'est-ce qui a changé ? Dans quel rapport entre la culture de la société occidentale dans laquelle ils vivent et celle de la société arabo-musulmane d'où sont issus leurs parents se construisent-il ? C'est à partir de l'analyse de discours recueillis au cours d'entretiens individuels et collectifs et d'un même questionnaire, soumis dans des conditions similaires à des enfants et des préadolescents à quinze ans d'intervalle, que nous abordons ces questions, sous l'angle, d'une part, des affiliations et des pratiques revendiquées au quotidien et d'autre part, l'islam jouant un rôle majeur dans la construction identitaire de ces enfants, sous celui du rapport au sacré
