Il racconto “La mite” fu scritto nel 1876 per il “Diario di uno scrittore”. L’autore lo definisce “fantastico” perché trasmette al lettore i pensieri più intimi del protagonista come se quest’ultimo li stesse dettando a qualcuno in un preciso momento. Un soliloquio delirante e balbettato, urlato e sussurrato di un marito che non si dà pace di fronte all’ineluttabile: una vicenda drammatica, in realtà, tutt’altro che fantastica. I pensieri dell’uomo sono influenzati dai suoi sentimenti contraddittori, ma a tratti anche lucidi. Il racconto comincia nel più duro dei modi: una ragazza, una giovanissima moglie, morta suicida e appena adagiata su un tavolo di casa sua da alcuni sconosciuti. La burocrazia e la società ottusa possono diventare veri e propri mostri in grado di inghiottire persone intere? Dostoevskij scrisse "Il Coccodrillo" nel 1865 regalandoci una storia surreale, visionaria e persino ironica, che lui stesso lasciò quasi volontariamente o provocatoriamente incompiuta. In un negozio del Passage, una galleria commerciale di lusso, Ivan Matveič viene inghiottito da un coccodrillo portato lì in mostra. Sua moglie e un suo amico rimangono prima paralizzati, poi sbalorditi nello scoprire che l’uomo non solo è rimasto vivo, ma addirittura si è sistemato comodamente nelle viscere dell’animale. Si tratta di un racconto di critica sociale e d’introspezione psicologica. Una lettura sorprendente e inquietante, che fa riflettere sulle conseguenze della cieca adesione alle regole e alla routine, e sulla necessità di difendere la propria umanità in un mondo che sembra averla persa.

Il racconto registra, in forma quasi stenografica, come sotto dettatura, le riflessioni contraddittorie di un uomo che prima si discolpa, quindi accusa, rivolgendosi ora a sé ora a un giudice immaginario. Con ritmo incalzante il protagonista si pone domande fasulle e si dà risposte evasive, mentre viene sempre più in luce il carattere tutt'altro che "mite" della giovane donna.
