How wealthy American women--as consumers and as influencers--helped shape French couture of the late nineteenth century; lavishly illustrated. French fashion of the late nineteenth century is known for its allure, its ineffable chic--think of John Singer Sargent's Madame X and her scandalously slipping strap. For Parisian couturiers and their American customers, it was also serious business. In Dressing Up, Elizabeth Block examines the couturiers' influential clientele--wealthy American women who bolstered the French fashion industry with a steady stream of orders from the United States. Countering the usual narrative of the designer as solo creative genius, Block shows that these women--as high-volume customers and as pre-Internet influencers--were active participants in the era's transnational fashion system. Block describes the arrival of nouveau riche Americans on the French fashion scene, joining European royalty, French socialites, and famous actresses on the client rosters of the best fashion houses--Charles Frederick Worth, Doucet, and Félix, among others. She considers the mutual dependence of couture and coiffure; the participation of couturiers in international expositions (with mixed financial results); the distinctive shopping practices of American women, which ranged from extensive transatlantic travel to quick trips downtown to the department store; the performance of conspicuous consumption at balls and soirées; the impact of American tariffs on the French fashion industry; and the emergence of smuggling, theft, and illicit copying of French fashions in the American market as the middle class emulated the preferences of the rich. La obra es una investigación histórica sobre la evolución de la protección a la infancia en España, durante el siglo XIX y primeras décadas del XX. A través del estudio en profundidad de los personajes más importantes que conformaron las distintas Comisiones Ejecutivas de la Sociedad Protectora de los Niños, se van introduciendo los avances y algún retroceso que se produjeron en favor de la infancia más necesitada. La inauguración de El Refugio en 1893 como centro de acogida de niños pobres, abandonados y huérfanos, debe considerarse como el primer establecimiento madrileño que disfrutó de unas normas higiénicas declaradas como modelo. Además en sus aulas y patios se ensayaron de forma brillante, métodos pedagógicos innovadores donde se practicaban a diario las clases al aire libre, juegos y paseos. Las colonias escolares no se olvidaron y la Sociedad benéfico privada las instauró en 1893. En la última parte de la obra y concluida la Guerra Civil Española, se analiza a la Sociedad Protectora de los Niños y cómo retomó su actividad, adaptándose a las necesidades del momento y a las prescripciones legales, anteponiendo el nombre de Fundación a su primitivo nombre. Los proyectos actuales se organizan desde dos enfoques diferentes: los desarrollados en la Comunidad de Madrid y los llevados a cabo en el extranjero. Los primeros se dirigen a niños y jóvenes en situaciones de vulnerabilidad social y educativa. En el extranjero, los objetivos son alimenticios, higiénicos, médicos y educativos, disponiéndose de Proyectos en: República Democrática de El Congo, Etiopía, Kenia, Mozambique, Bolivia, Perú y Filipinas.

Through the study of more than twenty novels produced in Spain from the 1840s to the 1920s, this book explores the literary means by which the social options available to modern Spanish bourgeois citizens were discursively constructed, occasionally before and often concomitantly to their production in reality. As a result, this study is concerned with the interplay of realism and reality in modern Spain. From the earliest folletines of the 1840s to the Modernist novels of the 1920s, the majority of novels written in this eighty-year period are what one might term novelas de costumbres contempor neas, or novels of contemporary customs, and therefore primarily concerned with faithfully copying and moreover influencing real social norms in the public sphere. In these pages, I argue that the spatial and behavioral discourses in the novels of contemporary customs offer a telling history of the evolving formulation of the Spanish bourgeoisie. The linking of novels and urbanism is hardly arbitrary in the context of nineteenth-century Spain. Urbanism, particularly in the nineteenth century, was as much a verbal construction as the novel, as proven by the lengthy treatises of such prominent Spanish bureaucrats, engineers, architects, and urban planners as Ram n de Mesonero Romanos, Ildefons Cerd and Carlos Mar a de Castro. For Spanish intellectuals of this era, city planning and the novel functioned as parallel, enmeshed discourses in which to work out what it meant to be middle class and the roles this class ought to play in contemporary society. In this way, they can be considered associated fields of discourse, in the sense described by Michel Foucault in The Archaeology of Knowledge. Foucault's treatise was a call for scholars to reexamine historical fields and question the historical grouping of knowledge(s) into certain discursive unities, and consider whether these might be broken up and new ones conceived. In this vein, this book undertakes a broader and more integrative view of the Spanish nineteenth century, calling into question the boundaries of fields such as etiquette and urban planning, or literature and touristic discourse.
