Las fuentes normativas de la moralidad pública moderna es una obra que tiene por objeto analizar las contribuciones de los más relevantes pensadores sociales, tales como Emile Durkheim, Jürgen Habermas y John Rawls, al problema de la constitución moral en las sociedades modernas. Este primer volumen se ha dedicado monográficamente a revisar en profundidad la obra de Emile Durkheim desde la perspectiva central de su preocupación por restaurar la moral e identidad colectivas en la Francia de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, convulsionada por las vertiginosas transformaciones estructurales de la fase tardía de la revolución industrial. Toda la construcción teórica de la naciente sociología durkheimiana va a comparecer bajo su compromiso con el proyecto regeneracionista y modernizador de la Tercera República Francesa, asumido como la más urgente necesidad social desde su paso de formación por L'Ecole Normale Supérieure. Fruto de este compromiso será una visión de la moral desde un anclaje cognitivo "convencional", es decir, aquel que prioriza un vínculo individuo-sociedad procedente de la solidaridad mecánica como definitorio de los hechos sociales, frente a un vínculo individuo-individuo, más propio de una moral postconvencional/orgánica. El resultado de tal diagnóstico sobre las sociedades de su tiempo, y especialmente de la sociedad francesa, le llevará a Durkheim a alcanzar una comprensión sesgada de las sociedades normativas y de integración estructural, y a proponer como solución a la crisis económica y política una revitalización de las corporaciones profesionales.

La elaboración de una moral laica es un tema recurrente en toda la obra durkheimiana. Es esta moral la que permitirá el funcionamiento de las sociedades internamente diferenciadas, ya que a la particularidad de cada sujeto se le antepondrá siempre un objetivo social que dé sentido a la propia vida individual. Pero, para lograr esta finalidad se requiere del sistema escolar. Para DURKHEIM, el contenido de la educación consiste en la moral racional y laica, destinada al logro de los grandes objetivos que ahora se necesitan: el desarrollo intelectual de los individuos, el valor de la dignidad humana en que debe basarse cualquier organización social y la construcción de una moral global que se extienda tanto al ámbito privado como al público, dotando a la sociedad de elevados y altruistas ideales. Para este autor la educación moral no puede ser una asignatura concreta; es inseparable de todo el proceso educativo mismo; se mezcla con cuanto se hace en la escuela y es la argamasa que da trabazón y sentido a la misma. El cuadro de la educación trazado por Émile DURKHEIM es uno de los más completos y ambiciosos de cuantos han conocido los sistemas escolares occidentales. Y lo es por razones múltiples: por su fundamentación teórica, por la capacidad para relacionar la educación con el conjunto de la sociedad, por la amplitud de los temas tratados y por la perspectiva ideológica que en él prevalece. Es difícil encontrar una teoría sociológica de la educación tan consistente como la DURKHEIM. El presente volumen se completa con la primera lección del curso, que nunca había aparecido en ediciones anteriores. Asimismo se incluye como anexo la lección inaugural del curso titulado "La enseñanza de la moral en la escuela primaria", recientemente recuperada, dado que su contenido se vincula directamente con los temas abordados en este libro y sirve para precisar aún más el significado que para DURKHEIM tiene la moral laica.
