Quoique le fondateur du positivisme ne donne qu’à partir de 1852 le nom de « morale » à une science particulière, la « préoccupation morale » est, sans aucun doute, « au moins aussi constamment présente chez Comte que le souci politique ». C’est au reste bien d’une « préoccupation » que, du début à la fin d’une longue carrière, il s’agit. « M. Comte », dit justement Stuart Mill, « est un homme enivré de morale ». Ni la fondation de la sociologie, en vérité, ni l’élaboration de la philosophie positive, ni l’interprétation de la « physiologie phrénologique » donnée dans le Cours et dans le Système, ni la gnoséologie de notre auteur, ni sa classification des sciences, ni la théorie positive du langage, ni, bien entendu, l’instauration finale d’une religion de l’Humanité ne peuvent s’expliquer, nous allons essayer de le prouver, si on ne les rapporte à l’ambition comtienne de mettre fin à une « grande crise », c’est-à-dire de rétablir un ordre moral dans la société. Un « Essai sur la morale d’Auguste Comte » ne peut donc être, dans le fait, qu’un essai sur « l’ensemble du positivisme ».
