El manuscrit original de La mort i la primavera, amb les seves múltiples reelaboracions, és un dels millors testimonis de la manera de treballar de Mercè Rodoreda. És, a més, una mostra clara que el seu estil «pur i inesperat» era fruit d’una conquesta: L’autora reescrivia i revisava el que ja havia escrit moltes vegades fins a aconseguir dotar de nitidesa i d’efecte unes imatges extremament punyents. Al novembre de 1961, després d’haver treballat durant mesos en la novel·la i d’haver-ne fet diverses versions, Rodoreda va mostrar per primer cop La mort i la primavera al seu company Armand Obiols. Aquest, admirant-ne la qualitat, es va abocar a convèncer la seva companya que aquella obra seria una de les més grans de tota la seva trajectòria; superior, al seu judici, a La plaça del Diamant. A partir de llavors, Obiols va comentar-li, a sobre mateix de l’esborrany de l’última de les versions escrites el 1961, i també per carta, tots els capítols de la primera part i els primers de la segona part. La investigació d’Eva Comas Arnal posa la lent d’augment en aquests passatges comentats per Obiols i en la posterior tasca de reescriptura que en va fer Rodoreda. Més enllà de si l’escriptora adoptava o no els suggeriments del seu company, és necessari adonar-se que en aquests passatges comentats i en la seva posterior reelaboració, Rodoreda i Obiols van sostenir un diàleg fascinant a propòsit de l’estil. L’assaig que teniu a les mans mira d’escatir quins són, precisament, els principis bàsics que governen aquest diàleg.
