Chalga, fado, lavarti, rebetiko, morna... Sono musiche che abbiamo a malapena sentito nominare. In realtà nascondono mondi incredibilmente variegati, microcosmi esistenziali dove l'umanità trova il suo più ampio respiro. Non hanno nulla a che vedere con l'universo mainstream, ma proprio per questo conservano caratteristiche uniche, perfettamente in linea con il concetto di musica pura e incontaminata. Molte di esse sono figlie della sofferenza e dell'emarginazione e riguardano figure leggendarie che hanno segnato percorsi storici epocali. I musicisti ra'f, per esempio, patiscono il dominio dei colonizzatori francesi (e poi quello degli integralisti); quelli csangó non si sono ancora liberati dall'ansia di far parte di un paese che è e non è il loro. La musica che abbiamo ascoltato fino a oggi potrebbe non essere quella che meglio mette a fuoco la nostra quotidianità. L'alternativa, allora, può essere quella ricamata da uno strumento che non abbiamo mai ascoltato, come lo shamisen giapponese, la cobza moldava o lo zither austriaco. Contrariamente a quanto si creda, queste musiche non sono morte, ma vive e vegete, e in certi casi addirittura in espansione. La musica dell'assenza, titolo preso dallo scritto introduttivo di Vinicio Capossela, le va a cercare in ogni angolo di mondo raccontandone la storia, l'evoluzione, gli esponenti principali e gli strumenti più rappresentativi, svelando come dietro ogni canzone ci sia una lezione sociale e morale.

Women play a decisive role as dedicatees of Marenzio's madrigals and in influencing the way in which they were performed. Bizzarini examines in detail the influence of both female and male patrons and performers on Marenzio's music and career, including his connections with the confraternity of SS Trinit?nd other institutions. Dedications were also a political tool, as the book reveals. Many of Marenzio's dedications were made at the request of his employer Cardinal d'Este who wanted to please his French allies. Caterina Cornaro (1454-1510) came from one of the most important Venetian families of her time and became the last queen of Cyprus. On the occasion of the fifth centenary of her death, an international conference was held in Venice in September 2010 - organised by the two editors of this volume. During that interdisciplinary event, well-known scholars from the fields of history, art history, literary history, archaeology, Byzantine studies and musicology presented the results of their most recent research across a broad subject area. The queen's biography and myth were traced, as well as the reception of this historical figure in art and on stage. Stress was laid upon socioeconomic and cultural phenomena resulting from the close contact between Venice and Cyprus during the Renaissance period, and also in focus was the literary production at Caterina's court 'in exile' in Venice and the neighbouring mainland.
