Pour devenir capitale industrielle de l'Europe continentale, Paris développe entre 1780 et 1830 deux révolutions techniques. La première, biochimique, se déploie grâce à l'humidité ambiante et à la fermentation des matières organiques qui imbibent le sous-sol et la nappe phréatique : la capitale est la principale productrice de salpêtre et assure ainsi près du tiers des besoins en poudre. Peaux, graisses, os, sang, grains, chiffons, poils, verre, ferraille, cendres, ces matières brutes sont collectées, triées et transformées en atelier pour devenir des matières premières de haute valeur travaillées par le corroyeur, le hongroyeur, le chandelier, l'amidonnier ou le boyaudier, le fondeur, l'étameur, le plombier. Parallèlement à cette révolution artisanale qui tire parti d'un milieu particulièrement riche, une révolution chimique s'enclenche à l'initiative de l'Etat et des scientifiques qui s'impliquent pour rendre le royaume, la république, l'empire, moins dépendants des importations de soude, d'acide, de céruse, de cuivre, de fonte, d'or. Les manufactures - start-up dirions-nous aujourd'hui - prolifèrent dans les proches faubourgs, Grenelle, Vaugirard, La Gare, et aux portes, Saint-Martin, Saint-Denis, Temple, Saint-Antoine, engendrant de nouveaux métiers - blanchisseurs, cérusiers, raffineurs, laveurs de cendres - et de nouveaux produits - colle forte, bleu de Prusse, noir animal, platine, zinc, eau de Javel, soude - qui font du département de la Seine la première technopole. Enfin, dans les années 1820, la mécanique se déploie, comme en Grande-Bretagne. L'atmosphère séquanaise évolue dangereusement. La nappe souterraine est très saline. L'air devient nauséeux. Aux pollutions organiques dégagées par l'artisanat et la putréfaction de matières résiduaires - boues, eaux usées - s'ajoutent les pollutions minérales provenant de l'industrie consommatrice de houille, de la métallurgie et de l'orfèvrerie qui diluent des vapeurs chargées de métaux, de la chapellerie qui exhale du mercure. Les hôpitaux sont débordés ; les citadins rentiers se plaignent ; des épidémies couvent, malgré les mesures prises par la préfecture de Police pour enrayer les maux du progrès. Ambiance noire que quelques lumières éclairent avec peine. Cette histoire saisit l'ambiance ouvrière des arts industriels, elle décape une époque et une économie qu'on croyait bien connaître. C'est une histoire des techniques dans leur milieu.

When blacksmith Pierre Michaux affixed pedals to the front axle of a two-wheeled scooter with a seat, he helped kick off a craze known as velocipedomania, which swept France in the late 1860s. In the last generation the classic Marxist interpretation of the French Revolution has been challenged by the so-called revisionist school. The Marxist view that the Revolution was a bourgeois and capitalist revolution has been questioned by Anglo-Saxon revisionists like Alfred Cobban and William Doyle as well as a French school of criticism headed by François Furet. Today revisionism is the dominant interpretation of the Revolution both in the academic world and among the educated public. Against this conception, this book reasserts the view that the Revolution - the capital event of the modern age - was indeed a capitalist and bourgeois revolution.
