Sembra incredibile che di uno dei più grandi poeti della storia umana, Tito Lucrezio Caro, si sappia di certo poco più del suo nome. Stando a quanto racconta san Girolamo, l'autore del De rerum natura era nato all'inizio del I secolo a.C., per morire poco più che quarantenne, forse mentre ancora era impegnato nelle ultime correzioni del suo poema. Più sconcertante e con ogni probabilità leggendaria è l'unica altra notizia che ci viene tramandata su Lucrezio, che sarebbe morto a causa dell'ingestione di un filtro d'amore che lo aveva condotto alla follia, costringendolo a scrivere sfruttando i momenti di temporanea remissione. Pochi e opinabili accenni che, molti secoli dopo, avrebbero ispirato Marcel Schwob nel capitolo dedicato a Lucrezio delle sue Vite immaginarie, proposto in appendice a questo volume. Ispirandosi alla dottrina del filosofo Epicuro, il De rerum natura dedica alcune indimenticabili osservazioni proprio alla passione amorosa - la più violenta e inestinguibile tra le passioni. Solo Catullo, tra i contemporanei di Lucrezio, si inoltrò così a fondo nei meandri psicologici dell'eros, che non è fatto solo di presenza fisica, ma agisce anche attraverso le immagini mentali della persona amata, quei "simulacri" che sono formati da sottilissimi, impalpabili aggregati di atomi capaci di generare ossessioni inestinguibili. Probabilmente Lucrezio non è mai stato vittima di una pozione magica, ma di sicuro conosceva bene, e fu capace di analizzare in versi immortali, tutti i veleni del desiderio e i loro effetti.
