Els periodistes Joan Costa i Deu i Modest Sabaté van escriure, en un any de diferència, els dos llibres que ara es reediten conjuntament. El primer, La nit del 6 d'Octubre a Barcelona, va aparèixer a Barcelona l'abril del 1935, i el segon, La veritat del 6 d'Octubre, es va publicar molt poc temps abans de les eleccions del febrer del 1936, que, amb la victòria de les esquerres, havien de portar l'amnistia i el restabliment del govern de Lluís Companys. El reportatge de Joan Costa i Deu i Modest Sabaté sobre el 6 d'Octubre a Barcelona és probablement el més detallat dels que es van publicar en aquell moment. No precisa l'armament de què disposava el govern de la Generalitat, es limita a dir que era abundant, i la conclusió del llibre és que, fora de la resistència des del local del CADCI , no hi va haver gairebé resistència armada contra l'exèrcit. Dels llibres que es publicaren a Catalunya sobre el 6 d'Octubre el 1935, i abans de les eleccions que va guanyar el Front d'Esquerres el febrer de 1936, els dos de Costa i Deu i Sabaté són dels pocs, si no els únics, que no tracten de justificar les esquerres.

Aquest reportatge presenta el gran interès de parlar dels fets del 6 d'Octubre fora de Barcelona i, en concret, a Badalona, Sabadell, Granollers, Vilanova i la Geltrú, Vilafranca del Penedès, Palafrugell, Girona, Sant Vicenç de Castellet, el Morell, Navàs, Sant Jaume de Domenys i la ciutat de Lleida. A Granollers i Vilanova hi va haver combats amb morts i ferits després de la rendició del govern de la Generalitat. La tesi del llibre és que si a Barcelona la revolta va tenir un caire purament polític i catalanista, en canvi, a altres poblacions catalanes va ser "purament social en el pitjor sentit del mot". Dels llibres que es publicaren a Catalunya sobre el 6 d'Octubre el 1935, i abans de les eleccions que va guanyar el Front d'Esquerres el febrer de 1936, els dos de Costa i Deu i Sabaté són dels pocs, si no els únics, que no tracten de justificar les esquerres.

The culmination of a half-century of historical investigation, A People Betrayed is not only a definitive history of modern Spain but also a compelling narrative that becomes a lens for understanding the challenges that virtually all democracies have faced in the modern world. Whereas so many twentieth-century Spanish histories begin with Franco and the devastating Civil War, Paul Preston’s magisterial work begins in the late nineteenth century with Spain’s collapse as a global power, especially reflected in its humiliating defeat in 1898 at the hands of the United States and its loss of colonial territory. This loss hung over Spain in the early years of the twentieth century, its agrarian economic base standing in stark contrast to the emergence of England, Germany, and France as industrial powers. Looking back to the years prior to 1923, Preston demonstrates how electoral corruption infiltrated almost every sector of Spanish life, thus excluding the masses from organized politics and giving them a bitter choice between apathetic acceptance of a decrepit government or violent revolution. So ineffective was the Republic—which had been launched in 1873—that it paved the way for a military coup and dictatorship, led by Miguel Primo de Rivera in 1923, exacerbating widespread profiteering and fraud. When Rivera was forced to resign in 1930, his fall brought forth a succession of feeble governments, stoking rancorous tensions that culminated in the tragic Spanish Civil War. With astonishing detail, Preston describes the ravages that rent Spain in half between 1936 and 1939. Tracing the frightening rise of Francisco Franco, Preston recounts how Franco grew into Spain’s most powerful military leader during the Civil War and how, after the war, he became a fascistic dictator who not only terrorized the Spanish population through systematic oppression and murder but also enriched corrupt officials who profited from severe economic plunder of Spain’s working class. The dictatorship lasted through World War II—during which Spain sided with Mussolini and Hitler—and only ended decades later, in 1975, when Franco’s death was followed by a painful yet bloodless transition to republican democracy. Yet, as Preston reveals, corruption and political incompetence continued to have a corrosive effect on social cohesion into the twenty-first century, as economic crises, Catalan independence struggles, and financial scandals persist in dividing the country. La guerra civil de 1936-1939 ha sido, sin duda alguna, el acontecimiento más importante de la historia contemporánea de España, hasta tal punto que sus consecuencias se prolongaron durante buena parte del siglo XX. Cataluña, que durante los años 30 fue considerada «el baluarte de la República», vivió la guerra desde una perspectiva diferente al resto de la España republicana. La profunda revolución social, que se desarrolló como consecuencia del estallido bélico, impregnó todos los niveles de la sociedad catalana: la política, la economía, la cultura, etc., hasta tal punto que sin la revolución se hace difícil entender la guerra civil en Cataluña y la propia evolución de la España republicana. Partiendo de las causas y de los antecedentes del conflicto bélico, el libro muestra la evolución política y militar, los conflictos que enfrentaron a las diferentes fuerzas políticas del bloque antifascista, las disidencias que existieron entre los Gobiernos de la República y de la Generalitat, sin olvidar las dificultades de todo tipo –especialmente las alimenticias– que sufrió la población durante la guerra y sin pasar por alto aspectos más conflictivos y polémicos –como la represión o la persecución religiosa– que se produjeron en la retaguardia catalana. El libro concluye con la derrota republicana y con un análisis sobre las profundas consecuencias que esta derrota comportó para Cataluña y para el conjunto de España.
