La nostra Africa non è il titolo di un libro nostalgico dei «bei tempi delle colonie» e quel possessivo «nostra» non va inteso nel senso in cui gli italiani del fascismo interpretavano il «Mare nostrum». Se infatti c’è uno storico che più di ogni altro ha avuto il coraggio di dire tristi verità sulla colonizzazione e di smantellare uno dei miti più cari agli italiani, quello del «bono italiano», nato come compensazione alle numerose man-chevolezze, diciamo così, che abbiamo esportato anche in terra d’Africa, questo è stato Angelo del Boca. Si potrebbe dire che la storiografia delle colonie italiane va vista in due tempi: prima di Del Boca, quando anche gli storici ben intenzionati non volevano credere che noi ci eravamo comportati come tutti gli altri co-lonizzatori, e dopo Del Boca, quando le prove da lui trovate – tra una certa ostilità generale – avevano as-sunto il colore definitivo della verità. Tutto questo non ha mai voluto significare che gli italiani non abbiano amato l’Africa o che nelle colonie siano arrivati solo stupidi e feroci generali, come Graziani o altra gente di malaffare. La storia d’oltremare dell’Italia è stata più breve di quella di altri paesi. Ma in questi pochi decenni oltre due milioni di coloni, operai, impiegati, arrivati in queste terre per le più diverse ragioni, sono riusciti a tra-sformare i loro interessi casuali o di guadagno in qualcosa di molto più duraturo, di cui si sentono gli echi ancora oggi nei figli di chi aveva fatto dell’Africa una seconda patria. E che ha prodotto un immenso corpo cartaceo, fatto di memorie, ricordi stanziali e di viaggio, esplorazioni serie e per ridere, e così via, un mate-riale molto spesso sconosciuto, straordinariamente interessante ma pochissimo letto, in cui solo Del Boca poteva districarsi, scegliendo gli autori e i brani più adatti a un lettore di oggi. Un lavoro unico, fatto per dare il panorama più ampio possibile della nostra presenza in Africa, in cui nostra ha lo stesso senso della Mia Africa di Karen Blixen. Quello di un grande amore che rimane intatto nella memoria.
