La notte tra l’11 e il 12 novembre del 1940 la Squadra Navale italiana, trovandosi in gran parte riunita nel grande porto di Taranto perché l’indomani sarebbe dovuta salpare per effettuare un bombardamento navale contro la base britannica di Suda (Creta), fu attaccata in modo coordinato da aerosiluranti e bombardieri Swordfish decollati dalla nuova portaerei britannica Illustrious. Morirono 58 marinai italiani e molti altri rimasero feriti, mentre sei unità di guerra furono danneggiate, quattro delle quali in modo grave. L’episodio viene ricordato come “la notte di Taranto” o “l’attacco di Taranto”, evento che interessò anche la Marina Imperiale giapponese, che nel maggio 1941 mandò a Taranto un sua delegazione per avere le maggiori informazioni su quell’episodio, per poi effettuare, il 7 dicembre 1941, un proprio attacco in scala maggiore contro la grande base statunitense di Pearl Harbour, riuscendo ad affondare due corazzate e a danneggiarne altre cinque. Nell’attacco a Taranto, praticamente la metà delle sei corazzate italiane presenti alla fonda nel Mar Grande, la Conte di Cavour, la Duilio e la Littorio furono messe fuori combattimento con siluri, mentre tra le navi minori danneggiate da bombe, l’incrociatore Trento riportò le maggiori avarie. L’Operazione “Judgement”, coordinata dalla FAA con la RAF di Malta, che assicurò il servizio di ricognizione, rappresentò una grande e indiscutibile vittoria britannica e dell’ufficiale che la portò a compimento, il Comandante della Flotte del Mediterraneo (Mediterranean Fleet), ammiraglio Andrew Browne Cunningham.
