El sábado 25 de abril de 1953 irrumpe en los quioscos de prensa españoles, La Novela del Sábado, que sería la penúltima de las colecciones literarias de novela breve. Nos referimos a colecciones literarias de autores españoles y de obras en su mayoría inéditas. Más tarde, los quioscos se inundarían, y aún se inundan, de series que tienen como características su bajo precio y el agrupar obras conocidas de autores españoles y extranjeros, clásicos y modernos. La Novela del Sábado suministró a sus lectores una mezcla de autores españoles pertenecientes a las generaciones anteriores a la guerra, autores de postguerra, del siglo XIX y autores extranjeros de prestigio. Pero lo que caracterizó a La Novela del Sábado, que asistió puntualmente a la cita con sus lectores a lo largo de cien números semanales, abril 1953-marzo 1955, fue que trató de reverdecer, a casi medio siglo de distancia, y así lo expresa en su número 1, los "frutos tan sazonados y tan bellos como los que esmaltaron las páginas de El Cuento Semanal y Los Contemporáneos". Pese a su más que mediana calidad literaria, la importancia de La Novela del Sábado fue que agrupó y fundió en una sola colección dos polisistemas diferentes y sucesivos: el de entreguerras y el de postguerra, dándonos con dicha conjunción la imagen exacta del polisistema literario español en la segunda década del franquismo. En el presente volumen José María Fernández Gutiérrez realiza un estudio de esta colección, que fue la más importante de la postguerra. El autor analiza obra a obra, comparándolas con la producción de preguerra, lo que sin duda es metodológicamente un acierto. Su estudio se completa con una ficha técnica y un breve análisis de la trayectoria editorial de la colección.
