Las reflexiones que puede aportar la historia de la lectura ?y, en ella, la historia de la literatura? son de la mayor vigencia para la sociedad en la respuesta a interrogantes contemporáneos sobre los procesos lectores y sus públicos, a la vez que sobre los mecanismos de funcionamiento de circuitos de producción, difusión y reopción de lo escrito. Más aún, la historia de la lectura se valida frente a la posibilidad que le da responder preguntas sobre las formas como se expresa en la actualidad la relación lectura-sociedad, de interés central para su diálogo con las demás formas de aproximación a lo social.Esta relación entre historia y literatura permite rastrear alguno de los elementos por medio de los cuales se puede comprender los hábitos y prácticas, a partir de las tradiciones lectoras, de la preocupación por la construcción de la nacionalidad en el siglo XIX. No se puede pensar la novela nacional, publicada por entregas, sin relacionarla de manera indisoluble con las publicaciones extranjeras que compartieron el proceso lector, los efectos de la lectura y la forma como coexistieron en las publicaciones periódicas. Así, al reconocer la función social de la lectura y la literatura, se exponen las diversas formas como se consolidan representaciones e imaginarios, en los que lo nacional se construye en la apropiación de problemas ?aún actuales? como las diferencias sociales, la guerra, la disputa por el territorio, la manera de concebir la historia de los partidos políticos, la decisión por formas de organización política, la mujer, tensiones de género, la ubicación de lo étnico frente a lo social, la función de lo extranjero y el problema religioso. Por último, este libro permite al lector reconocer allí los diversos mecanismos y responsabilidades en las que participa en el complejo mundo de la circulación de lo escrito.
