Las novelas históricas del romanticismo hispanoamericano cumplen un papel fundamental en la articulación del imaginario colectivo nacional durante el siglo XIX. Largo tiempo olvidadas y desplazadas de la historia literaria, no obstante su intertextualidad en la tradición narrativa y la literatura del posboom, la crítica no ha prestado suficiente atención a los modos ficcionales y a la retórica que enmarcan la «nacionalización» de este género narrativo popular a partir de determinados paradigmas. Este libro plantea un acercamiento sociohistórico y explora la noción de género incorporando las ideas de Frye y Jameson sobre el romance junto a otros abordajes teóricos desde una perspectiva poscolonial para estudiar el erotismo del discurso político y la alegoría de la nación presentes en textos representativos de ese período.

En este contexto, la exaltación de los regímenes constitucionalistas, así como del progreso, fueron los principales rasgos constitutivos de una joven "tribu liberal" tanto en la Península como en América.En sus páginas se hallará el establecimiento de una confluencia de ideas literarias y políticas a ambas orillas del Atlántico. Ya en el siglo XIX, por ejemplo, la impronta de Larra, así como la de otros autores románticos (Zorrilla, Rivas o Espronceda), que fueron admirados en Hispanoamérica, fue difuminada por la crítica anglosajona y francesa, especialmente.
