Este trabajo es el esfuerzo conjunto de dos equipos de investigación alejados en la geografía, pero cercanos y coincidentes en sus inquietudes y afán de conocimiento, tanto España, que tiene una clara coincidencia histórica con América Latina, como Albania, han tenido una historia rica y paralela, pero de la que, probablemente por desconocimiento, difícilmente se han encontrado puntos de interés común. Este libro viene a cubrir esa laguna con interesantes aportaciones en la historia de las relaciones hispano-albanesas y a poner de manifiesto que, por encima de las diferencias, existe un pasado común de pertenencia no sólo a un mismo continente en el caso de España y Albania, sino también a unas raíces que si bien diferentes no son tan dispares en ninguno de los casos. Estos países han sido crisol de culturas y en sus tierras se han desarrollado distintas creencias religiosas que no siempre de manera fácil han debido aprender a convivir. También comparten una herencia multiétnica y si bien han tenido una trayectoria política dispar, en el caso de España y Albania más claramente, hoy existen intenciones de converger en una misma casa común: Europa, que comparten ambos territorios. El lector que se sumerja en la lectura de este interesante volumen , podrá descubrir en el viaje que emprenda a lo largo de sus páginas, no sólo la historia de Albania o su realidad actual, sino otros aspectos tan importantes como la imagen que los albaneses tienen de los españoles y de América Latina, cómo ven y perciben a sus gentes, qué aprecian de ellas y hacia dónde está focalizado su interés. Who shapes the European Union’s policy towards Latin America? How has this EU policy modified individual member states’ relations with the region? This book provides a comparative account of seven member states’ bilateral links with Latin America since 1945, in the context of their EU membership and based on the concept of ‘Europeanization’. It illustrates how and why the main architects of this EU policy have been Spain and Germany. In contrast, Poland, Sweden and Ireland, which had little previous interaction with Latin America, have developed their current relations with that region virtually as a result of their EU membership. The United Kingdom and France lie in the middle: they have been influential in certain policy-areas and key periods in history, while they have adapted to what is done at the EU level in others. This volume explores several notable themes related to foreign affairs in Latin America and the reconfiguration of the power of the different states in the region. It offers insightful historical perspectives for understanding national, regional and global issues from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, from analysis of the traditional "hegemony" of the United States over Latin America through its military, and political influence due to the presence of the European Union, Russia, and China.
