El tema de raza en América Latina ha tomado fuerza en los últimos años. Se trata de reconocer que las clasificaciones raciales han moldeado la forma de ordenar las sociedades de la región, de percibir a sus miembros y de entender cómo lo han hecho. El asunto no había recibido la atención que merece por varias razones. La evidente importancia de las divisiones de clase en la región hizo que esta categoría tomara preeminencia en las décadas de 1960 y 1970, cuando las ciencias sociales adquirieron mucha fuerza académica. Además, la idea muy arraigada de que las relaciones entre diferentes grupos raciales es armónica hacía ver el tema como insignificante. Por otra parte, el convencimiento al que se llegó en la segunda mitad del siglo xx de que las supuestas razas no corresponden a realidades objetivas (aunque las clasificaciones raciales sean muy reales), hacía su estudio, primero poco válido y luego indeseable, pues podía tener el efecto de reforzar categorías que enfatizan desigualdades. Pero el nuevo peso académico de las perspectivas culturales, sumado a la atención internacional que el tema ha recibido como en el caso de la Conferencia Mundial contra el Racismo, celebrada en Durban en 2001, y la tradición de la influyente academia estadounidense, le han dado un nuevo vuelo a la preocupación por comprender cómo el concepto 'raza' ayuda a comprender el pasado y presente latinoamericanos.

"La independencia política de las antiguas colonias de España y Portugal en Centro y Sudamérica no fue seguida por una emancipación de las comunidades indígenas. Aunque la retórica nacionalista celebró la preponderancia de la nueva raza «mestiza» frente al antiguo colonizador europeo, el sistema de explotación socioeconómica y discriminación racista no se modificó, y se ha mantenido hasta nuestros días incluso en países donde la población indígena es mayoritaria. En países como México, Venezuela, Colombia o Perú, y especialmente en Brasil y el Caribe, los descendientes liberados de los esclavos africanos fueron igualmente arrinconados en todos los dominios de la sociedad. Sin embargo, y aunque es evidente que el racismo en América Latina hinca sus raíces en el colonialismo y en las formas subsecuentes de dominación social, económica y cultural por parte de las élites «blancas» o «casi blancas», se suele dejar de lado el hecho de que el racismo no es innato, sino aprendido, y de que este proceso de aprendizaje es en gran parte discursivo, está basado en formas de texto y habla producidas en una gran variedad de eventos comunicativos. Este libro es el resultado de un proyecto colectivo en el que equipos de expertos de ocho países latinoamericanos realizaron un informe sobre el racismo en su propio país (especialmente en la forma sutil del discurso de las élites), que profundiza, al contemplar los casos específicos, lo expuesto por Teun A. van Dijk en Dominación étnica y racismo discursivo en España y América Latina (Gedisa, 2003)."

This book centers on a foundational moment for Latin American racial constructs. While most contemporary scholarship has focused the explanation for racial tolerance-or its lack-in the colonial period, Marixa Lasso argues that the key to understanding the origins of modern race relations are to be found later, in the Age of Revolution.Lasso rejects the common assumption that subalterns were passive and alienated from Creole-led patriot movements, and instead demonstrates that during Colombia's revolution, free blacks and mulattos (pardos) actively joined and occasionally even led the cause to overthrow the Spanish colonial government. As part of their platform, patriots declared legal racial equality for all citizens, and promulgated an ideology of harmony and fraternity for Colombians of all colors. The fact that blacks were mentioned as equals in the discourse of the revolution and later served in republican government posts was a radical political departure. These factors were instrumental in constructing a powerful myth of racial equality-a myth that would fuel revolutionary activity throughout Latin America.Thus emerged a historical paradox central to Latin American nation-building: the coexistence of the principle of racial equality with actual racism at the very inception of the republic. Ironically, the discourse of equality meant that grievances of racial discrimination were construed as unpatriotic and divisive acts-in its most extreme form, blacks were accused of preparing a race war. Lasso's work brings much-needed attention to the important role of the anticolonial struggles in shaping the nature of contemporary race relations and racial identities in Latin America.
