Esta obra ofrece al estudiante universitario y al lector en general una visión sistemática y coherente de los aspectos fundamentales de la lingüística, con especial referencia a la lengua española. El libro consta de cinco partes: 1. Nociones generales. 2. Fonética y fonología. 3. Morfología y sintaxis. 4. Semántica, lexicología y lexicografía. 5. Pragmática. En la primera, se exponen las cuestiones relativas a la teoría general de los signos (semiología o semiótica), la lingüística como ciencia, la naturaleza del lenguaje y el signo lingüístico, que sirven de marco a las restantes. En la segunda, tras caracterizar la fonética y la fonología, se plantea la distinción de los sonidos y los fonemas, así como de las vocales y las consonantes, y se estudian los grupos vocálicos, los diferentes tipos de rasgos, la neutralización y el archifonema, la correlación, la mutación y la sílaba. En la tercera, delimitado el lugar de la morfología y la sintaxis en la lingüística, se pasa a la consideración del morfema, la palabra, el sintagma, la oración (definiciones, oración y enunciado, oración y proposición, oración y cláusula, oración y frase), las funciones, las categorías y la transposición, y el texto. En la cuarta, se deslinda el objeto de estudio de la semántica, la lexicología y la lexicografía, y se abordan los problemas de la significación, las agrupaciones léxico-semánticas, el cambio semántico, los elementos constitutivos del léxico y los diccionarios. En la quinta, dedicada a la pragmática, se analizan regulan el empleo del lenguaje en la comunicación, a través de las teorías de los actos de habla (principalmente, de los ilocutivos), las implicaturas, la argumentación, la relevancia y la cortesía. Al final de cada una de estas partes, se incluye una bibliografía específica.
