Numantia written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and has been published by DigiCat this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-02 with Drama categories.

Numantia presents the patriotic story of collective sacrifice in the face of General Scipio's siege. It shows the collapse of the pre-Roman city of Numancia, in Spain, during the time when Genera Scipio Aemilianus built a huge wall around the city. This prevented the entrance of food or the citizens' escape, leading to the defeat of the Iberians by hunger. Cervantes adds a slight love angle to the main political-military subject to increase the audience's interest. The most incredible thing about this tragedy is that there are no main characters. All Numantians act as one absolute power. Each character embodies a different aspect of life and comes from a separate class of society, but during War, all differences are forgotten, and everyone joins the hand. Numantia has a historical value apart from its artistic merit. It was declared by some critics to be the first work of actual tragic power that appeared in Europe since the extinction of the Greek and Roman drama.

Prose romance of chivalry, possibly Portuguese in origin. The first known version of this work, dating from 1508, was written in Spanish by Garci Ordóñez (or Rodríguez) de Montalvo, who claimed to have "corrected and emended" corrupt originals. Internal evidence suggests that the Amadís had been in circulation since the early 14th century or even the late 13th. Cf. Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Three classic Spanish plays, made famous by Shakespeare and Webster Two of the most famous and successful playwrights of Spain's Golden Age of playwriting were Lope de Vega (1562-1635) and Rojas Zorrilla (1607-48). From their prodigious output, the three plays in this volume, based on similar sources to Shakespeare's and Webster's versions, provide a fascinating comparison with their Jacobean counterparts. Lope's The Duchess of Amalfi's Steward, in contrast to Webster's play, focuses on the nobility of love, with characters who are complex and appealing. His Romeo-and-Juliet story, The Capulets and Montagues, is a fast-moving mixture of serious and comic, with an ending that will surprise and entertain. Rojas' treatment of Cleopatra, with its rich imagery, emphasises the love theme, held within a knot of jealous relationships. A full introduction by Gwynne Edwards sets the plays in context and provides a thorough study of the individual works.

Catullus And His World written by Timothy Peter Wiseman and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with History categories.

This book is an attempt to read the poems of Gaius Valerius Catullus in his own context; to look at the poet and his works against the cultural realities of the first century BC as recent advances in historical research allow us to understand them. Catullus' own social background, the circumstances of the literary life of his time, the true extent of his works and the variety of audiences he addressed - these and other questions are explored by Professor Wiseman with new and startling results. Contemporary high society and politics are illustrated through Clodia and Caelius Rufus, considered not as mere adjuncts to Catullus' story but as significant historical personalities in their own right. A final chapter on nineteenth- and twentieth-century interpretations of Catullus' world shows how anachronistic preconceptions have prevented a proper understanding of it, and made this radical reappraisal necessary. Anyone with a serious interest in Latin literature or Roman history will want to read this book. Students in the upper levels of school or at university will find it essential background reading to their work on Catullus and Cicero's Pro Caelio.
