The Patagonian Sublime provides a vivid, accessible, and cutting-edge investigation of the green economy and New Left politics in Argentina. Based on extensive field research in Glaciers National Park and the mountain village of El Chaltén, Marcos Mendoza deftly examines the diverse social worlds of alpine mountaineers, adventure trekkers, tourism entrepreneurs, seasonal laborers, park rangers, land managers, scientists, and others involved in the green economy. Nous n’avions plus que 4 km à parcourir. Nous étions encore au calme, mais nous apercevions les crêtes blanches des déferlantes qui s’approchaient. Nous ne nous hasardions pas à maintenir l’embarcation trop près de la plage dans la crainte qu’elle ne se brisât. Pour finir, nous relâchâmes la corde de débardage, nous attachâmes les chevaux pour venir les chercher plus tard et nous rembarquâmes. Nous nous mîmes à ramer de toutes nos forces, il ne manquait plus que 2 km. La tourmente nous rattrapa à quelque cent mètres de la plage et elle nous recouvrit de sable, d’herbes de pâturage et de petits arbustes... venus d’un kilomètre plus loin. Par deux fois le bateau fut presque complètement rempli d’eau quand la corde de débardage se tendit. Comme toujours, Alfred était au gouvernail, qu’il gardait fermement sous son bras gauche tandis que son bras droit tenait, en l’air, une hache bien aiguisée. Brodersen, Hans et moi, nous ramions ou nous reculions en fonction de la tension de la corde de débardage. Les déferlantes étaient chaque fois plus hautes. Soudain en arriva une énorme. À PROPOS DE L'AUTEUR Andreas Madsen (1881-1965) est né dans le Jutland, au Danemark. Il s’établit au sud de la Patagonie argentine en 1903 et y vivra jusqu’à la fin de ses jours. Paru en 1948, son récit La Patagonie autrefois est une chronique attachante de ses années de pionnier.
