Gran parte de la cultura de los pueblos indígenas se sustentó y aún se sostiene en la memoria oral, en la transmisión de relatos de generación en generación. Mi abuela paterna se llamaba Francisca Tulián, fue ella quien más me transmitió sobre mi cultura. Desde la palabra, pero también desde el ejemplo y por sobre todas las cosas, desde el amor. A pesar de su prolongada edad, tenía una lucidez mental y vitalidad física ejemplares. Cada fin de año cocinaba un pastel de carne al plato para cada uno de los comensales a su mesa, no menos de dos docenas de personas cada año. Un pastel único, cortando la carne con su pequeño y afilado cuchillo que debería haber tenido tantos lustros como ella; con masa casera, y decorado con un delicioso merengue... Sus enseñanzas, atenciones y detalles eran únicos y diferenciados con cada uno de sus nietos. Nos hacía un pequeño pan casero en la maravillosa forma de una palomita, que esperábamos al pie de aquel horno de barro donde cada semana hacía el pan más sabroso de todos. De pequeña sus reclamos y llamados de atención hacia mi cabello y mi peinado eran constantes. Estar "bien peinada" parecía ser algo importante para ella. Llegó a preocuparme hasta el punto de esmerarme en emprolijar mi cabello antes de ir a su casa. Con el tiempo, me di cuenta de que estar bien peinada, para ella, era tener siempre mi cabello trenzado. Así, las expresiones culturales son magia, hechos concretos y tangibles, y espíritus danzando en el viento de los tiempos. Francisca es una niña de trenzas tan largas y negras como una noche de invierno sin luna. Vive en un pueblo serrano llamado San Marcos Sierras, junto a una familia muy grande.
