La peregrinación de Bayoán empieza con un viaje por el Caribe. Bayoán, el protagonista, marcha de Puerto Rico rumbo a Europa y describe los archipiélagos cercanos a Cuba y su llegada a La Habana. En Cuba Bayoán se enamora de Marién en una suerte de alegoría de la unión de las Antillas españolas. Desde el prólogo Eugenio María de Hostos hace evidente el plan de su obra: «Quería que Bayoán, personificación de la duda activa, se presentara como juez de España colonial en las Antillas, y la condenara; que se presentara como intérprete del deseo de las Antillas en España, y lo expresara con la claridad más transparente.» En La peregrinación de Bayoán los protagonistas del relato tienen nombres alusivos a la población autóctona del Caribe. Hay también un contraste entre el viaje a Europa y la reafirmación identitaria, entre el discurso local y la pretensión de expresar ante el Viejo Mundo el deseo de Latinoamérica de alcanzar y manifestar una madurez intelectual y espiritual.

Power and Pilgrimage is an in-depth anthropological study of life at a Bolivian pilgrimage site. It focuses on the experiences of pilgrims and how, in their Marian devotion, they express and learn to live with the various inequalities they experience in everyday life. Issues of poverty and class inequality lead them to approach the Virgin of Urkupina to support them in their quest for economic betterment. Another social inequality that comes to the fore is based on gender: in particular Bolivian women seek Mary's support to deal with violence and oppression in their homes. Finally, ethnic inequalities are discussed by analysing the dance processions in honour of the Virgin, since these reflect contested ethnic identities.

This volume examines the changing role of Marian devotion in politics, public life, and popular culture in Western Europe and America during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
