Il flagello della peste e il colore della pelle sono i temi dei due saggi qui raccolti. Il primo percorre in linea trasversale i testi da Tucidide a Camus, considerando in particolare Lucrezio, Boccaccio, Defoe, Manzoni, Poe, Puškin e Artaud, senza tuttavia trascurare Sofocle, Erodoto, Virgilio, Procopio di Cesarea, sant'Agostino, Shakespeare, La Fontaine, Coleridge e alcuni minori: il secondo esplora nello stesso senso la trilogia – una raccolta di dodici racconti e due romanzi – dell'afroamericano John Edgar Wideman, impegnato scrittore del nostro tempo. Il germe della peste e il nero della pelle sono all'origine di due sciagure di massa: dell'una la letteratura rende conto a partire dalla sumerica Saga di Gilgamesh del secondo millennio a.C., che considera la visita del dio della peste un disastro inferiore soltanto al Diluvio: dell'altra testimoniano oltre due secoli di storia a decorrere dal 1619, quando approdò in America il primo vascello olandese, che con un carico di venti deportati africani aprì la piaga dello schiavismo. L'oscuro flagello di Dio, dunque, e il lampante flagello dell'uomo. Null'altro rimane allora se non la lotta per salvare la pelle: non l'anima, come un tempo, o l'onore, la libertà, la giustizia, ma la «schifosa pelle». Come ha scritto Milan Kundera, nella «Pelle» Malaparte «con le sue parole fa male a se stesso e agli altri; chi parla è un uomo che soffre. Non uno scrittore impegnato. Un poeta».
