Logique et métaphysique ne sont pas pour lui deux choses distinctes plus préoccupé qu'aristote de l'unite des sciences, il conçoit la dialectique ou la philo 50phie comme un ensemble de procédés à double portée, qui atteignent tout à la fois les lois de la pensée et les lois de l'être. Aristote ne méconnaît pas l'unite des sciences, mais il s'attache plus à les distinguer qu'a les rapprocher, et il établit dans le domaine de la philosophie une distinction profonde entre la logique, science formelle, et la métaphysique, science réelle. C'est à ce point de vue qu'il se place ordinairement dans ses objections contre la dialectique platonicienne, où il ne voit qu'un travail stérile (et comme subjectif) de la pensée sur elle-même, au lieu d'un travail fécond sur les réalités, objets d'expé r1ence.
