Excerpt from La Philosophie Positive, Vol. 11: Juillet A Decembre, 1873 Il est assez vraisemblable que le bouddhisme ne fut accepte, tout d'abord, que par les classes superieures, partagees entre les deux doctrines alors existantes, celle de Confucius et celle de Laotseu, car elles seules pouvaient connaitre et traduire les Soutras sanscrits, d'ailleurs, les annales chinoises nous ont conserve l'histoire de plusieurs rois qui protegeaient ouvertement le bouddhisme et le declaraient meme religion d'Etat. Mais, peu a peu, il se propagea dans son veritable element, dans le peuple; c'est la qu'il a vecu, c'est la qu'il vit encore de nos jours, les lettres professant pour lui un profond mepris et restant attaches aux idees de Confucius. La vie monastique - l'institution fondamentale du bouddhisme - etait particulierement mal vue des gens eclaires, et un empereur celebre, Tai-Tsong, exprimait a son egard cette opinion curieuse et caracteristique: Nos ancetres etaient d'avis, dit-il, que, si un seul homme ne travaillait point, si une seule femme ne s'occupait pas de la culture des vers a soie et du filage, quelqu'un en souffrirait dans le pays, quelqu'un aurait faim et froid. Qu'arrivera-t-il si, comme cela se voit de nos jours, un grand nombre d'ecclesiastiques des deux sexes se nourrissent et s'habillent de la sueur des autres, et emploient, de plus, beaucoup d'ouvriers pour batir de superbes temples aux frais d'autrui? Cette remarque pleine de sagacite n'empecha nullement le peuple d'accourir dans les temples et le bouddhisme de faire des proselytes; comme dans l'Inde le peuple etait attire par une doctrine qui promettait le salut a tout le monde sans distinction de position sociale, d'education et de fortune. Comme dans l'Inde aussi, l'element populaire determina le caractere mystique que la religion du Bouddha prit, des son entree en Chine; ce caractere y fut meme plus marque que dans l'Inde. Les Cramanas, devenus par la suite les Chamans, etaient de veritables sorciers; ils operaient des miracles de toute nature, guerissaient les maladies incurables au moyen d'exorcismes, attiraient ou prevenaient les calamites publiques et privees; tout cela etait bien fait pour frapper l'imagination du peuple, qui ne prend jamais de la religion que le cote merveilleux. Aussi le peuple venait-il en masse au bouddhisme et l'on peut dire que, vers la fin du vi siecle de notre ere, il appartenait tout entier a la doctrine du Bouddha. This collection of essays demonstrates the width of Darwin's interests and ability as a biologist. The theory of evolution by natural selection was, of course, his most important achievement and is covered in three of the essays: Wilkie presents Darwin's theory in its historical setting and relates it to the earlier work by Buffon and Lamarck; Haldane discusses the theory of evolution by natural selection, as postulated by Darwin, and assesses its validity in the light of subsequent research; and Challinor considers the apparent discrepancy between some of the fossil evidence and Darwin's theory, a problem which Darwin himself appreciated and discussed in The Origin of Species.
