This book is devoted to the phenomenon of removal of people declared "public enemies" from group photographs in Stalin’s Russia. The book is based on long-term empirical research in Russian archives and includes 57 photographs that are exceptional in terms of historical interest: all these images bear traces of editing in the form of various marks, such as blacking-out, excisions or scratches. The illustrative materials also include a group of photographs with inscriptions left by officers of Stalin’s secret police, the NKVD. To approach this extensive visual material, Denis Skopin draws on a wealth of Stalin-era written sources: memoirs, diaries and official documents. He argues that this kind of political iconoclasm cannot be confused with censorship nor vandalism. The practice in question is more harrowing and morally twisted, for in most cases the photos were defaced by those who were part of victim’s intimate circle: his/her colleagues, friends or even close family members. The book will be of interest to scholars working in history of photography, art history, visual culture, Russian studies and Russian history and politics.

Ce livre pose un regard glaçant sur la manière dont un homme, Joseph Staline, manipula l'opinion, par le photomontage dans le but d'exalter le culte de sa propre personnalité tout en effaçant la mémoire de ses victimes. En effet, sur ordre de Staline, des laborantins du Parti supprimèrent à l'aérographe l'image de ses rivaux réels ou supposés dans les portraits de groupe au fur et à mesure des purges qui les frappaient, trafiquèrent des scènes de foules et rapprochèrent photographiquement le " Petit Père des peuples " du grand Lénine pour lui conférer une légitimité factice. Au cours des trente dernières années, David King, historien la photographie, a rassemblé la plus importante collection au monde de photos, d'affiches et de tableaux retouchés sous l'ère soviétique. Sa collection rassemble plus de vingt-cinq mille images, dont les plus éloquentes ont été réunies dans le présent ouvrage. Dans certains cas, quand le rythme des liquidations dépassait les capacités de la machine à falsifier, les visages de ses victimes étaient sauvagement noircis à l'encre dans les documents officiels du Parti, les survivants craignant qu'on leur reproche de ne pas les avoir censurés eux-mêmes. Dans chaque cas, la juxtaposition de l'original et de l'image altérée livre un aperçu terrifiant - et parfois d'un comique tragique - d'un régime régi par la paranoïa et le mensonge institutionnalisé, et dévorant, physiquement et symboliquement, ses meilleurs serviteurs.
