La struttura complessiva è quella di una sinfonia: quattro tempi musicali, organizzati in quattro vite, divise in quattro aree geografiche, ognuna delle quali informa di una nuova coscienza della vita. Il dialetto messinese, che spruzza colore ed ironia sulle vicende, immerge in un clima leggero e positivo, che comunica sia la difesa dei valori trasmessi dalla famiglia, sia il bisogno di liberarli e trasformarli nella vita imprevista dei protagonisti. Un omaggio a una città che fu chiamata "la bella del Bosforo", osannata, dimenticata, mai rivalutata abbastanza, ma che si legge, in questo romanzo, senza polemiche e con memoria e nostalgia, in una dimensione fusionale con la storia dei protagonisti. Una città che, prima vicina, poi si allontana, per trasformarsi in altre città del mondo - Milano, Dusseldorf e New York - e che infine torna vicina, torna a se stessa, come un'anima corale, plateale che si unisce alla sua anima lirica, di cui La Pianista è portavoce. Gli spartiti per pianoforte, che chiudono o aprono la narrazione, donano un senso di composizione univoca, teatrale e a tratti cinematografica, che completa il destino e l'opera spirituale della Pianista, come la mano di un dio. Qualunque esso sia. Probabilmente siciliano. Sicuramente di Messina.
