La Pipa de Kif es uno de los poemarios que integran Claves líricas, colección que recoge la obra poética de Ramón María del Valle-Inclán. Este en concreto recoge una colección de poemas cuyos temas se centran en el esperpento y el simbolismo, todo ello dominado por uno de los temas constantes en Valle-Inclán: el reflejo social de su tiempo. Ramón María del Valle-Inclán fue un escritor español nacido en Villanueva de Arosa en 1866. Está considerado como uno de los autores más señeros de la literatura española de todos los tiempos. Su obra abarca la poesía, la novela y el teatro, y se adscribe tanto a la corriente modernista en sus primeros escritos como a la Generación del 98 en sus obras más maduras. Su obra literaria se compaginó con sus ensayos y artículos periodísticos, que publicó en periódicos de su época como El Correo Español y El Universal de México. Se le conoce como el creador y el máximo exponente del "esperpento" españo, una modalidad de narración que intenta buscar la hipérbole satírica en el aspecto más trágico y miserable del realismo.

La pipa de kif constituye la culminación de la producción lírica de Valle-Inclán. Aunque desde el punto cronológico se publicó en 1919, un año antes que El pasajero, existe cierta unanimidad entre los especialistas a la hora de considerar esta obra como la que recoge los últimos versos fijados por el autor (más allá del Réquiem o de algún otro poema aparecido en publicaciones periodísticas hoy casi imposibles de localizar). Si alguien se pregunta por qué no publicó más poesía durante las dos últimas décadas de su vida, confieso que desconozco la respuesta (no sé si el acreditado espíritu crítico del autor y la constante depuración de su producción literaria son motivos de suficiente peso específico para explicar esta situación).En La pipa de kif persiste parte de la estética modernista de Valle-Inclán (no en vano el autor fue un declarado admirador de Rubén Darío), tanto en la selección de algunos temas como en la musicalidad de determinados poemas. Sin embargo es perceptible que el escritor ha asimilado ya la pertinente dosis de este movimiento artístico y se encuentra en vías de consolidar una propuesta lírica propia en su lenguaje y temática.A lo largo de los distintos poemas que conforman La pipa de kif percibimos el peso específico del disparate y el esperpento, la inmisericorde crítica de la pazguata y mediocre sociedad de la época, las constantes referencias a los bajos fondos y al inframundo que lo conforma (en forma de prostitutas y rufianes, homicidas y verdugos, carteristas y alcahuetas...).Los poemas se van sucediendo como aldabonazos sobre el cerebro del lector: "El preso", "Garrote vil", "El crimen de Medinica"... nos sitúan ante esa España negra que había sido retratada en su momento por Francisco de Goya o que en ese mismo periodo histórico estaba cincelando su contemporáneo José Gutiérrez Solana. El comienzo de "Garrote vil" resulta suficientemente significativo del genio creador y de la capacidad de crítica de Valle-Inclán: "¡Tan! ¡Tan! ¡Tan! / Canta el martillo, / el garrote alzando están, / canta en el campo un cuclillo, / y las estrellas se van al compás del estribillo / con que repica el martillo: / ¡Tan! ¡Tan! ¡Tan!".Incluye una biografía del autor.
