La Convención de Naciones Unidas sobre el Derecho del Mar prevé la posibilidad de que los Estados ribereños amplíen su plataforma continental hasta el borde exterior del margen continental. Se crea así un espacio marino suplementario donde los Estados pueden explorar y explotar los recursos naturales allí presentes.Los intereses que subyacen a estos anhelos de ampliación son de tipo tanto económico como político. El lecho y el subsuelo marino cuentan con recursos minerales y energéticos sumamente atractivos. Además, la ampliación de la plataforma supone un afianzamiento de la autoridad del Estado ribereño, que incrementa el territorio sobre el que ejercitar sus derechos.La determinación del límite exterior es una tarea amplia, compleja y costosa. Sin ningún tipo de condicionante, un Estado ribereño apostaría por ampliar la máxima extensión. Sin embargo, la proximidad de las costas opuestas o la adyacencia de otros países genera solapamientos que requieren una delimitación. Las superposiciones de espacios marinos de distintos Estados pueden llegar a convertirse en controversias, que en ocasiones son sometidas a la jurisdicción internacional o al juego de la diplomacia.La posición geoestratégica de España la convierte en un magnífico modelo de análisis de la práctica estatal, ya que se ha enfrentado al procedimiento de ampliación para la plataforma continental en el Golfo de Vizcaya, el área de Galicia y la zona al oeste de las islas Canarias, lo que le permite configurar un nuevo mapa sobre el que ejercer su soberanía.
