Pornographic Sensibilities stages a conversation between two fields—Medieval/Early Modern Hispanic Studies and Porn Studies—that traditionally have had little to say to each other. The collection offers innovative new approaches to the study of gendered and sexualized bodies in medieval and early modern textual production, including literary and historical documents. The volume’s embrace of the interpretative tools of Porn Studies also inscribes a critical provocation: in what ways can contemporary modes of reading the past serve to freshly illuminate not only the contours of that same past but also the very critical assumptions of the present upon which fields like medieval and early modern Hispanic Studies are built? In this way, Pornographic Sensibilities encourages at once both rigorous historicizations of pre- and early-modern culture, and playful engagement with "presentism," considered here as a critical tool to undress the hidden assumptions of both past and present. This move substantively challenges long-held critical orthodoxies among scholars of pre-Enlightenment periods, for whom the very category of "pornography" itself has often problematically been framed as an anachronism when applied to their work.

La primera parte se dedica a revisar y proponer un modo de lectura, teniendo en cuenta las dificultades que la poesía quevediana puede ofrecer al lector actual. Estas primeras páginas pueden considerarse una guía válida también para la lectura de otros poetas del Siglo de Oro. Incluyen una clara y didáctica exposición de las principales figuras estilísticas, juegos de palabras, etc. que utiliza Quevedo en su poesía burlesca. La segunda parte, dedicada a los comentarios de poemas concretos aplica las técnicas señaladas en la primera parte al análisis de varios poemas, empezando por el famosísimo soneto ERASE UN HOMBRE A UNA NARIZ PEGADO. Los sonetos y romances comentados ponen de relieve la excepcional capacidad de juego lingüístico de Quevedo, y el análisis de sus técnicas ilustra estos mecanismos expresivos. El libro muestra en este sentido un modo de comentario (con distintas variaciones complementarias sobre la propuesta básica inicial) que permita su aplicación a otros poemas que no podían ser comentados en estas páginas, concebidas a modo de guía para adentrarse en el mundo complejo, divertido y crítico, de la poesía satírica de don Francisco de Quevedo.

Francisco de Quevedo (Madrid, 1580-1645) was well known for his rich and dynamic style, achieved through an ingenious and complex manipulation of language. Yet he was also a consistent and systematic thinker, with moral philosophy, broadly understood, lying at the core of his numerous and varied works. Quevedo lived in an age of transition, with the Humanist tradition on the wane, and his writing expresses the characteristic uncertainty of a moment of cultural transition. In this book Alfonso Rey surveys Quevedo's ideas in such diverse fields as ethics, politics, religion and literature, ideas which hitherto have received little attention. New information is also provided towards a reconstruction of the cultural evolution of Europe in the years prior to the Enlightenment, and thus the scope of the book extends beyond that of Spanish literature.
