"Brines's seven poetry collections offer a sustained inquiry into three fundamental philosophical themes: knowledge, the present moment, and non-being. These themes, however, are presented as conflictual differences. The numerous poetic voices heard throughout his poetry continually wrestle with knowledge perpetually oscillating with ignorance, the present moment unceasingly becoming past, and human existence endlessly displaying its own finitude. Este libro afronta la obra toda de Francisco Brines desde la certeza de que no se puede entender su poesía (la razón de su existencia) sin considerarla en su más alto nivel, el del arco total de su escritura. Desde este sencillo pero novedoso planteamiento teórico, se intenta confirmar cómo el estudio aislado de algunos de sus poemas o de alguno de sus libros jamás pudo darnos la clave y el sentido que sólo se manifiestan en el nivel último de esta singular y espléndida construcción poética. La profunda coherencia de la escritura de Brines se fundamenta en una sorprendente relación con el devenir de la vida del poeta. Va modificándose (bien a través de la sensualidad o de la sequedad alternante de su estilo, bien por la distinta elección de sus imágenes, bien por las variadas configuraciones líricas del paisaje interior y exterior) según evoluciona su conflicto vital: desde la difícil personalidad juvenil, pasando por una asunción ética liberadora (muy propia de la Generación del 50 a la que pertenece), que le lleva a la aceptación gozosa de los poemas de la madurez.

A leading critic of contemporary Spanish poetry examines here the work of ten important poets who came to maturity in the immediate post-Civil War period and whose major works appeared between 1956 and 1971: Francisco Brines; Eladio Cabañero; Angel Crespo; Gloria Fuertes; Jaime Gil de Biedma; Angel González; Manuel Mantero; Claudio Rodríguez; Carlos Sahagún; and José Angel Valente. Although each of these poets has developed an individual style, their work has certain common characteristics: use of the everyday language and images of contemporary Spain, development of language codes and intertextual references, and, most strikingly, metaphoric transformations and surprising reversals of the reader's expectations. Through such means these poets clearly invite their readers to join them in journeys of poetic discovery. Andrew P. La poes�a espa�ola disidente de la posguerra civil y su relaci�n con el tema del exilio es el foco de estudio de este libro. Al situar tal poes�a firmemente en su contexto sociohist�rico, se pretende ampliar la cr�tica de dicho campo, tradicionalmente dada a considerar las posibles preocupaciones metaf�sicas y est�ticas de los poetas. Tomando como marco de referencia la teor�a literaria contempor�nea, con especial �nfasis en los modelos psicoanal�ticos y marxistas, se analiza la obra de tres poetas en particular: Francisco Brines, Jos� Angel Valente y Jos� Manuel Caballero Bonald.Partiendo de la premisa que el discurso hegem�nico idealista del franquismo ha exiliado a los poetas de su cuerpo material, sea en un sentido f�sico, ling��stico o sociohist�rico, se deslinda c�mo efect�an su revoluci�n mediante la creaci�n, po�tica, la cual abre la monolog�a oficial al di�logo heterog�neo. A fin de subrayar las diferencias visibles entre la obra proveniente de un per�odo de represi�n y la de una �poca democr�tica, se examina tambi�n la poes�a producida por Brines, Valente y Caballero Bonald con posterioridad al franquismo.
