Fray Luis es una de las voces más altas de toda la poesía en castellano. El propio Fray Luis dividió sus poemas en tres apartados: las originales, las traducciones de poetas profanos y las traducciones o versiones bíblicas. Quevedo editó por primera vez en 1631 sus poemas, utilizándolo como antinomia del culteranismo en el contexto de la guerra poética que mantenían Francisco de Quevedo y Luis de Góngora.
