El estudio sobre la lengua poética en Gloria Fuertes que se lleva a cabo en El juego de palabras en la poesía de Gloria Fuertes se centra fundamentalmente en el análisis de los mecanismos lingüísticos de orden fónico que, con carácter recurrente, son practicados por la poetisa en la composición de sus textos poemáticos. El fenómeno estructurador del trabajo es la paronomasia; su caracterización y clasificación conforme al ingente número de ejemplos hallados en el corpus reclama hacer una revisión crítica de las definiciones propuestas en los manuales de poética y retórica al uso, así como de las de otros procedimientos afines limítrofes con ella: el calambur, el anagrama, el homeotéleuton, la antanaclasis, la figura etimológica, la aliteración, el parequema, la parequesis, la falsa etimología, la antimetábole; hecho por el cual el presente trabajo constituye en sí mismo un breve «tratado» de retórica. En este sentido, el trabajo ofrece un doble interés para el estudioso de la lengua y la literatura: un mejor conocimiento de una escritora de posguerra y, por tanto, de la poesía del siglo XX, y el de algunos de los mecanismos lingüísticos que conforman el inventario de las figuras retóricas.

Es una de las poetisas más queridas y comprometidas de la posesía española del siglo XX. Desde 1961 a 1963 reside en los Estados Unidos al obtener una beca Fullbright de Literatura Española, impartiendo clases en las universidades de Bucknell, Mary Baldwin y Bryn Mawr. En 1971 recibió en Oslo el Premio Nobel de Literatura y a mediados de los años 70 colabora activamente en diversos programas infantiles de TVE, recibiendo en cinco ocasiones el Aro de Plata. A partir de estos años la actividad de Gloria Fuertes es imparable: lecturas, recitales, homenajes... siempre cerca de los niños; publicando continuamente, tanto poesía infantil como de adultos. José Aguilar, (Valencia, 1966) pintor, ilustrador y diseñador gráfico. Colaborador de periódicos españoles, revistas de cómic y editoriales europeas. Ilustrador de temas muy variados: infantil, histórico, terror y ciencia ficción. Escribe también los textos de algunos de los libros que ilustra.

A leading critic of contemporary Spanish poetry examines here the work of ten important poets who came to maturity in the immediate post-Civil War period and whose major works appeared between 1956 and 1971: Francisco Brines; Eladio Cabañero; Angel Crespo; Gloria Fuertes; Jaime Gil de Biedma; Angel González; Manuel Mantero; Claudio Rodríguez; Carlos Sahagún; and José Angel Valente. Although each of these poets has developed an individual style, their work has certain common characteristics: use of the everyday language and images of contemporary Spain, development of language codes and intertextual references, and, most strikingly, metaphoric transformations and surprising reversals of the reader's expectations.
