Pero Martín es obligado a alistarse en el ejército, comienza a odiar la vida militar, se rebela y finalmente deserta. A su regreso, descubre que su casa fue destruida y su familia se marchó. La desesperación lo lleva a unirse a los indios y a convertirse en un hombre fuera de la ley. La obra nos muestra el carácter independiente y heroico del gaucho, y lo sitúa como el verdadero representante del carácter argentino.
