Este poema gauchesco que consta de dos partes: "El Gaucho Martín Fierro" (1872) y "La Vuelta de Martín Fierro" (1879), es considerado una obra clásica ya que trata temas universales como la vida, la muerte y el destino del hombre. Su protagonista, el gaucho y payador Martín Fierro declama su lucha a favor de la libertad y contra la injusticia. En la primera parte, se relata la felicidad inicial de su vida familiar en el campo. Pero Martín es obligado a alistarse en el ejército, comienza a odiar la vida militar, se rebela y finalmente deserta. A su regreso, descubre que su casa fue destruida y su familia se marchó. La desesperación lo lleva a unirse a los indios y a convertirse en un hombre fuera de la ley. La obra nos muestra el carácter independiente y heroico del gaucho, y lo sitúa como el verdadero representante del carácter argentino.

El gaucho Martín Fierro es un poema narrativo argentino, escrito en verso por José Hernández en 1872, obra literaria considerada ejemplar del género gauchesco en Argentina, Uruguay y Río Grande del Sur (estado más meridional de Brasil). Debido a que tiene una continuación, La vuelta de Martín Fierro, escrita en 1879, este libro es también conocido como «La Ida». Ambos libros han sido considerados como libro nacional de la Argentina, bajo el título genérico de «El Martín Fierro». En «La Ida», Martín Fierro es un gaucho trabajador al que la injusticia social lo vuelve gaucho matrero (fuera de la ley).
