Este libro pretende ofrecer al lector -especialista o profano- la recopilación más exhaustiva posible de las cartas escritas por Miguel de Unamuno durante su destierro desde febrero de 1924 hasta su regreso triunfal a España seis años más tarde. A través de unas trescientas misivas -entre las cuales se incluyen las destinadas a su esposa Concepción Lizárraga, completamente inéditas- penetramos en la vida íntima y pública de un desterrado que fiscaliza de manera despiadada a toda una clase política en un momento crucial de la historia de su país. La mayor parte del espistolario evidencia la áspera lucha ideológica llevada por este opositor feroz al Directorio de Miguel Primo de rivera y a la Monarquía del Alfonso XIII; revela también la postura crítica de un intelectual comprometido, muy al tanto de la actualidad política europea y empeñado en influir sobre la opinión pública española, incluso desde fuera. Además, muchas cartas ofrecen secuencias de la vida íntima de Miguel de Unamuno, personaje polifacético. Dibujan poéticamente unos lugares pronto convertidos por el desterrado en paisejaes del alma: los de Fuerteventura, de París y por fin de Hendaya, `'el umbral de España'. Traducen su activa labor de publicista en semanarios clandestinos, las ambiciones de un escritor en busca de fama internacional mediante las traducciones de sus obras, pero, al mismo tiempo, se transparentan los pesares, las esperanzas y las dudas de un hombre que no deja de ser, a pesar del tiempo y de la distancia, un padre atento y un esposo púdico. La extrema variedad de los destinatarios de estas cartas privadas y a veces abiertas (estudiantes, familiares, políticos, amigos extranjeros, colegas, escritores, editores, traductores, ministros, embajadores y el propio rey Alfonso XIII) deja constancia de las nutridas redes que Miguel de Unamuno va tejiendo por aquellos años con Europa y América Latina. Si bien el destierro supuso momentos de abatimiento e incluso de depresión, fue también, según el propio escritor, uno de los momentos más fecundos de su vida y este epistolario rompe con la imagen tópica del desterrado solitario y desesperado.
