This wide-ranging book argues that criticism emerged in early bourgeois society as a central feature of a "public sphere" in which political, ethical, and literary judgements could mingle under the benign rule of reason. The disintegration of this fragile culture brought on a crisis in criticism, whose history since the 18th century has been fraught with ambivalence and anxiety. Eagleton's account embraces Addison and Steele, Johnson and the 19-century reviewers, such critics as Arnold and Stephen, the heyday of Scrutiny and New Criticism, and finally the proliferation of avant-garde literary theories such as deconstructionism. The Function of Criticism is nothing less than a history and critique of the "critical institution" itself. A recibir la influencia de tales corrientes de pensamiento me encontraba por lo demás predispuesto por un radical aborrecimiento de los discursos demasiado generales sobre el ser y el no ser y por la necesidad de permanecer con los pies en la tierra y de moverme, si era necesario moverse, dando un paso cada vez. Del neopositivismo he sacado el gusto por el rigor conceptual, de la filosofía analítica he aprendido cuán grande es la importancia de las cuestiones de palabras, especialmente en el procedimiento intelectual propio de los juristas que es la interpretación. Por lo demás, por la misma razón por la que no me he identificado con ningún “ismo” dominante en la filosofía italiana (después del idealismo fue la vez del existencialismo y del marxismo), no me he considerado nunca un neopositivista ni tampoco un filósofo analítico en el sentido estricto de la palabra. Cae de su peso que quien prefiere el paciente trabajo del análisis a la construcción de las grandes síntesis se mueve en pequeños espacios, tan pequeños como para no conseguir recorrer, incluso en el curso de toda una vida, todo el territorio. Para cultivar un campo inmenso, como es el del Derecho, en todos sus aspectos, sería necesario poseer un potente tractor, mientras que el único instrumento que he llegado a manejar son las tijeras del jardinero". Contemporary philosophers frequently assume that Kant never seriously engaged with Spinoza or Spinozism-certainly not before the break of Der Pantheismusstreit, or within the Critique of Pure Reason. Offering an alternative reading of key pre-critical texts and to some of the Critique's most central chapters, Omri Boehm challenges this common assumption. He argues that Kant not only is committed to Spinozism in early essays such as The One Possible Basis and New Elucidation, but also takes up Spinozist metaphysics as Transcendental Realism's most consistent form in the Critique of Pure Reason. The success -- or failure -- of Kant's critical projects must be evaluated in this light. Boehm here examines The Antinomies alongside Spinoza's Substance Monism and his theory of freedom. Similarly, he analyzes the refutation of the Ontological Argument in parallel with Spinoza's Causa-sui. More generally, Boehm places the Critique of Pure Reason's separation of Thought from Being and Is from Ought in dialogue with the Ethics' collapse of Being, Is and Ought into Thought.
