This is the first book that analyzes the transnational impact of the Great War simultaneously on two countries, Spain and Argentina, that remained neutral throughout the conflict. Both countries were very relevant in the conception of propaganda and policies of belligerent countries such as France, Germany and Great Britain and showed that the conflict had a global influence and affected deeply local political and cultural processes, even in areas geographically distant from the trenches. Within this framework, this book is focused on three aspects that are analyzed dynamically throughout the whole war from a transnational perspective: neutrality as a space of dispute between pro-Allies and pro-German sectors and its relation with local politics, the debate about what positions should be assumed in order to guarantee a world without war, and the polemics on the ideas of nations and supra-nations (Hispanism, Latinism, Pan-Americanism). The conclusions of the book highlight that the radicalization that exploded in 1917 in both countries was fundamental in shaping the political radicalization of the last months of the conflict and the postwar period. As happened in Europe, the Great War did not finish in 1918 and its traces continued in the 1920s and 1930s.

The book investigates the rather neglected "intellectual" collaboration between National Socialist Germany and other countries, including views on knowledge and politics among "pro-German" intellectuals, using a comparative approach. These moves were shaped by the Nazi system, which viewed scientific and cultural exchange as part and parcel of their cultural propaganda and policy. Positive views of the Hitler regime among intellectuals of all sorts were indicative of a broader discontent with democracy that, among other things, represented an alternative approach to modernization which was not limited to the German heartlands. La obra de Francisco Javier Puerto Sarmiento, Académico de Número de la Real Academia de la Historia y de la Real Academia de Farmacia y catedrático de Historia de la Farmacia de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, se centra en el análisis vital, académico y político de una de las figuras más relevantes para el devenir de la Segunda República y, sin embargo, más olvidadas. Se advierte en la personalidad de José Giral una doble vocación que le empujará por derroteros aparentemente contradictorios: la del hombre de ciencia, desde suposición como catedrático de la Facultad de Farmacia de la Universidad Central de Madrid, y la de hombre comprometido con unos ideales de lucha democrática que comenzaron en la huelga general de 1917 y prosiguieron bajo la dictadura de Primo de Rivera. A continuación, el texto se adentra en los avatares del personaje como Ministro de Marina con Azaña en el bienio progresista republicano. De especial interés es el estudio pormenorizado que el autor efectúa de la crisis del sistema de 1931 que conduce al estallido de la guerra civil, exponiendo con detalle la actuación de Giral como presidente del Gobierno a partir de agosto de 1936 en uno de los momentos más trascendentales para su proyección histórica. Su actividad política durante la guerra como ministro sin cartera en los gobiernos de Largo Caballero y Negrín fue el resultado de un sentimiento de deber para con su patria y para con la causa de la República que, en lo personal, le depararía sinsabores y todo género de incomprensiones. Singularmente brillante es el enfoque que realiza el autor de un materia poco conocida y tratada en la bibliografía española, como es la actuación del gobierno de la República en el exilio en los años cuarenta del pasado siglo, en los que Giral, a pesar de las decepciones, la edad, el cansancio moral y los problemas económicas, no abandona su compromiso al aceptar la presidencia del Gobierno en 1945-1946.
