Vi trova invece esseri umani, belli e misteriosi, che la sua cultura gli ha insegnato a considerare inferiori, buoni solo per essere resi schiavi. Attratto dalle tradizioni come dalla lingua che ha deciso di imparare, Adanson ascolta le storie che i griot avvolti nelle loro vesti sgargianti cantano e si tramandano, e apprende cosí di Maram, la Rediviva, rapita per essere venduta, miracolosamente fuggita ai suoi aguzzini e ora nascosta ai confini della terra senegalese.
