Entre el fin del siglo XX y primeras décadas del XXI se dio una ola mundial de indignación que convocó a millones de personas en las plazas públicas de 90 países para gritar su inconformidad, fenómeno mundial que tuvo como sedimento un malestar social con facetas variadas en cada región y país, cuya complejidad y diversidad invitan a la búsqueda de elementos explicativos y comprensivos. Tal es reflexión teórica que aquí ofrece Mauricio Guzmán Bracho, quien propone reconceptualizar las nociones de malestar social y transmodernidad para explicar desde la teoría sociológica el fenómeno del malestar social en la transmodernidad, su contenido, su tipología y sus connotaciones. Si bien la inconformidad social y las expresiones de descontento se han explicado desde diversas miradas analíticas para entender las condiciones de la estructura social que lo explican, quiénes son los sujetos sociales y cuáles las acciones sociales que lo evidencian, así como las relaciones características entre la estructura social y el malestar social. Junto a la indagación teoríca, el autor toma 15 casos de movimientos sociales entre 1980 y 2014 (desde Solidarnosc, hasta los ocurridos en Medio Oriente, Europa y América) para establecer las líneas de continuidad entre la estructura social transmoderna y el malestar social, con un enfoque comparativo de los impulsos históricos y rupturas epocales de la triada modernidad-posmodernidad-transmodernidad.
