La idea de pagar por los estudios (en todos los niveles de enseñanza), ha logrado instalarse en el sentido común de una porción importante de las clases medias y ha modificado las prácticas al tiempo que colaboró en la configuración de un esquema societal cada vez menos capaz de intervenir como integrador social. El proceso de privatización de la vida pública (e incluso privada) se instaló en los núcleos rectores del sentido y en todos aquellos espacios desde los cuales se organiza la vida social. En este marco, la definición del rol de la Educación Superior exige respuestas inteligentes que superen el terreno de la mera consigna para adentrarse de lleno en la problemática privatizadora. La privatización a la que hacemos referencia no va a resolverse proclamando la intangibilidad de la “cosa universitaria”, sino más bien organizando un sistema de Educación Superior capaz de superar el enfoque economicista de la universidad. El creciente papel del conocimiento, como medio de acumulación, hace que los distintos factores de poder se enfrenten por aquellas instancias donde este se produce y se transfiere. Este proceso es mundial por lo que vemos intervenir a las agencias internacionales y a los mismos Estados en la configuración de un esquema donde la educación se convierte cada vez más en un instrumento de disputa (a la vez que de configuración estructural) en la geopolítica del saber. Por este motivo es que la tarea de enfrentar la privatización de la Educación Superior no se limita a oponerse a los subsidios o exenciones de impuestos a las universidades privadas, sino que requiere un esfuerzo colectivo por recuperar el rol del Estado como hacedor de políticas públicas para el sector, superando aquellas visiones que lo entienden como mero administrador de recursos, incapaz de actuar como agente organizador en términos estratégicos.
