Writers, editors, activists and prostitutes. Women along the US-Mexico border served in many more capacities than simply wives and mothers, though those were their primary roles. Historically, religion was the link between women and the written word. According to the editors of this volume, Mexican women—particularly those from the privileged classes—had access to secular reading beginning in the 1800s. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, several periodicals dedicated to the education of the “fairer sex” emerged. Though the male voice initially predominated, women began contributing poetry and essays to various publications and eventually became editors of their own magazines and newspapers. This collection of ten essays, based on the examination of publications from the US-Mexico region between 1850-1950, explores the role of women in print culture. Leading to a better understanding of women in the history of Mexican border life, the essays are organized in three thematic groupings: “Exploring the Archives: Women and Written Culture in Northeastern Mexico during the Late Nineteenth Century,” “The Cultural History of Women and Print Culture” and “A Transcultural View of Women and their Role as Activists in Northern Mexico and Texas.” The scholars who researched the archival collections of newspapers, magazines and other print matter write about a variety of topics, including the participation of women in the War of Independence (1810-1821) and the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), the belief females were inferior and should not be educated outside the home and even the cultural history of prostitutes. Published as part of the Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage project, this compendium of academic articles sheds light on women’s roles—especially as readers, writers and editors—in the Texas-Mexico border region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

La Descripción de diferentes piezas de historia natural, es la primera obra científica que se publicó en Cuba, apareció. La publicó Antonio Parra, en 1787. Fue el resultado de un esfuerzo de varias décadas. Con solo dieciséis años Manuel Antonio Parra, hijo de Parra, se encargó de los grabados y coloración del libro que consagró a los Parra como impresores y autores. Felipe Poey clasificó y estudió los peces de Parra. Le dedicó además los nombres científicos de algunos de ellos, concediéndole el mérito de ser el primero en describirlos. Parra disecó muchos de los especímenes que aparecen en su libro. Seguía un método inventado por él, y conformó un gabinete de curiosidades en su casa en La Habana, muy concurrido por toda clase de curiosos. Se especula que fue José Antonio Aponte el ebanista que confeccionó los muebles en que se exhibía la colección de los Parra. Ésta, además de los animales disecados, tuvo especímenes vivos, como monos y caimanes. Enterado por una de las reales órdenes de que el Gabinete de Historia Natural de Madrid estaba interesado en la recolección y adquisición de especímenes naturales de España y sus colonias, Parra se puso en contacto con José Clavijo y Fajardo. Este dirigía dicho gabinete y se entusiasmó con los trabajos de Parra, estimulándolo para que ampliara su colección y propuso al rey que los comprase. En 1788 Parra viajó a Madrid con algunas de sus muestras y una edición de Descripción de diferentes piezas de historia natural. Carlos III, y su sucesor Carlos IV, adquirieron parte de la colección de Parra para el Gabinete de Historia Natural de Madrid. Entre 1790 y 1792 Parra recolectó y envió a Madrid, semillas y plantas cubanas a fin de aclimatarlas en el Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid y en el de Aranjuez. Su experiencia en ese sentido le sirvió para escribir y publicar en Madrid el folleto Discurso sobre los medios de connaturalizar en España los cedros de la Havana, y otros árboles, así de construcción, como de maderas curiosas y frutales (1799). En él hacía referencia a las especies enviadas por él a España, y a la forma de aclimatarlas en los jardines de Aranjuez, Cádiz y otras regiones españolas.
