Si les combattants, du fait de l'intensité des batailles et du nombre de ceux qui y sont engagés, concentrent l'intérêt historique, les populations des « régions envahies » en France du nord et du nord est et en Belgique, inventent quelques formes « d'une résistance sans armes » selon les termes utilisés dès les années 1920. Aide à l'évacuation des soldats qui veulent éviter la captivité, recherche de renseignements sur des objectifs militaires, publication des journaux clandestins, illustrent quelques-unes des pratiques de civils volontaires qui s'engagent au sein d'une population hostile au travail pour l'Allemand malgré les difficultés de la vie quotidienne. Quelques noms ont échappé à l'usure du temps. Gabrielle Petit ou Édith Cavell en Belgique, Léon Trulin, Eugène Jacquet, Louise de Bettignies, en France du Nord, offrent des exemples de ce patriotisme qui agit de part et d'autres de la frontière. Cette publication est le fruit des recherches menées par des historiens français et belges qui ont confronté leurs analyses au cours de la cinquième journée d'études bisannuelles tenue, en partenariat la ville et le Musée de la Résistance de Bondues, en janvier 2010.

Aerial Propaganda and the Wartime Occupation of France, 1914-1918 explores the combined role played by the French and British Governments and Armies in creating and distributing millions of aerial newspapers and leaflets aimed at the French population trapped behind German lines. Drawing on extensive research and French, German and British primary sources, the book highlights a previously unknown aspect of psychological warfare that challenges the established interpretation that the occupied populations lived in a state of total isolation and that the Allied governments had no desire to provide them with morale support. Instead a very different picture emerges from this study, which demonstrates that aerial propaganda not only played a fundamental role in raising morale in the occupied territories but also fuelled resistance and clandestine publications. This book demonstrates that the existing historiographical portrayal of the occupied civilian as an uninformed victim must be replaced by a more nuanced interpretation.

Our view of the First World War is dominated by the twin images of the fronts and the home fronts yet the war also generated a third type of ‘front’, that of military occupation. Vast areas of Europe experienced the war under a military regime and this book deals with the occupations by the German and Austro-Hungarian empires. Their conquests ranged from Lille in the West to the Don River in the East, and from Courland in the north to Friuli and Montenegro in the south. They encompassed capital cities such as Brussels, Warsaw, Belgrade and Bukarest, as well as areas of crucial economic importance. Millions of people experienced military occupation and, even though they were civilians, the war had a deep impact on their lives. Conversely, occupied territories influenced the states that had conquered them and on the way these states waged war.
