Tout enfant, je fus bercée par les chansons de Théodore Botrel : “Les chansons de la Fleur de Lys”, que ma mère me chantait d’une voix émue. À Héricy - où nous avions une maison couverte de roses - dès le mois de juin, arrivait ma vieille tante de Coëtlogon. Le soir, aux chandelles, dans un grand salon où, sur la cheminée, était posé un buste de la reine Marie-Antoinette toujours encadré de fleurs, tante Renée, très grave, racontait les batailles sanglantes de la Chouannerie. L’enfant du Temple était l’objet de toutes ses conversations. La déchirante séparation de la reine avec son fils - qu’on lui avait arraché malgré ses supplications et ses larmes - était évoquée avec tant d’émotion, que je pleurais en silence dans le petit coin d’ombre où je m’étais réfugiée pour l’écouter. Tante Renée affirmait que Louis XVII avait été remis à Charette après son évasion, que le Prince avait survécu à son martyre. Elle possédait des preuves indiscutables qu’elle m’a léguées. Ma mère était, à cette époque, en relations très amicales avec le prince Jean de Bourbon et sa femme, qui lui avait confié leur petit garçon. Le prince Henri de Bourbon ressemblait étrangement au Dauphin. Ma mère et ma tante adoraient le prince Henri. Il était charmant et très intelligent. Je ne m’expliquais pas très bien cet étrange drame de l’évasion. Le Dauphin, prisonnier de Simon, enfermé dans la forteresse qu’était le Temple, restait une énigme pour mon imagination surchauffée par ces récits. J’aimais beaucoup Henri de Bourbon, et je lui fis le serment que, plus tard, lorsque je serai grande, moi aussi j’écrirai l’histoire de son aïeul Louis XVII et que je n’oublierai point de citer toutes les preuves que donnait tante Renée. Ma mère, qui descendait des illustres marins bretons Mourgues, avait, elle aussi, des preuves de la survivance de Louis XVII, de sa famille bretonne. Mon père lui-même, assurait qu’en Europe Centrale on n’avait aucun doute sur l’évasion du Temple, et que Louis XVII n’était autre que Naundorff. Ainsi, avec tous ces souvenirs de mon enfance, j’ai travaillé cette question avec probité. J’ai mis neuf années de ma vie avant de sortir cet ouvrage, car je souhaitais ardemment que mes recherches aient la couleur de la vérité, et qu’elles puissent apporter à l’Histoire une page nouvelle.

To what extent did the French Revolution "revolutionize" the French family? In examining the changes in inheritance laws brought on by the Revolution, Margaret Darrow gives a lively account of the mixed effects legislation had on families of this period. As a test case, she has chosen the southern city of Montauban, whose Roman-based law enabling testators to appoint their heirs was contradicted by the new laws instituting equal inheritance. Filled with vivid anecdotes, this book shows how Montauban families in varying social classes adapted their financial strategies to cope with rapidly shifting circumstances, often creating solutions not envisioned by the legislators. With family history as its focus, Revolution in the House also provides a detailed social history of Montauban during the French Revolution.
