La correspondencia de José Ortega y Gasset con Victoria Ocampo, entre 1917 y 1941, ofrece una riquísima vertiente histórica y emocional en que fluyen afinidades, encuentros, disensos y transferencias personales que abarcan un extenso horizonte cultural y generacional a disposición del lector aficionado al género biográfico y de interés para investigadores y estudiosos del hispanismo internacional. Forman parte de un largo diálogo entre un filósofo y una debutante, y que se inicia con una joven Victoria a quien Ortega, fundador de El Espectador y Revista de Occidente, introdujo en el mundo de las letras hispanas traduciendo del francés De Francesca a Beatrice, el comentario de Ocampo sobre la Divina Comedia de Dante. A partir de los años treinta Victoria, como fundadora de la revista Sur y la editorial homónima, realizó un esfuerzo, para una mujer, sin precedentes. Mantuvo una densa y nutrida correspondencia con numerosos intelectuales de la época, que revela una generosa y asombrosa personalidad de mente universal y amplitud de miras. Asimismo, las cartas del filósofo español conforman un fragmento del complejo epistolario de don José con profesionales, científicos y celebridades del entorno europeo. Es interesante destacar que ambos epistolarios, el de Ortega y el de Victoria, reúnen en conjunto una inusual circunstancia o perspectiva que transcurre entre el viejo continente en declive y una nación joven in statu nascendi y con un porvenir promisorio. Es a este público sudamericano entusiasta y ávido de cultura al que Ortega durante años incorporó a su razón vital e histórica en constante evolución filosófica. Confiamos en que el lector pueda saborear la trama de tantas vidas, pasiones, matices sentimentales y tiempos históricos que se entrecruzan en estas cartas.
