Nell’Ottocento l’etica di Aristotele, che aveva dominato la cultura europea sin dagli inizi dell’era cristiana (il primo commento all’Etica Nicomachea risale ad Aspasio, II secolo d. C.), ebbe una breve eclissi, nel senso che fu temporaneamente soppiantata dall’etica di Kant e poi dall’utilitarismo e dalle scienze umane (antropologia, psicologia, sociologia). Ma quando, a metà del Novecento, ci si rese conto dell’incapacità delle scienze umane di dare giudizi di valore e quindi di orientare la prassi, venne riscoperta l’etica aristotelica, anzi la “filosofia pratica” di Aristotele, intesa come forma di razionalità non scientifica e tuttavia autentica, capace di orientare la prassi. Di qui la valorizzazione della “saggezza” a opera di Gadamer e della sua scuola, delle virtù in generale da parte di McIntyre e dei comunitaristi, della nozione di eudaimonia come piena realizzazione della capacità umane da parte di Martha Nussbaum e persino di un economista come Amartya Sen. Ma con la filosofia pratica di Aristotele è stata riscoperta anche la sua filosofia politica, che indica nella naturalità della polis la possibilità di un superamento dello Stato moderno ormai manifestamente in declino per la perdita dell’autosufficienza. Un’utilizzazione della politica aristotelica nella direzione di una società politica multinazionale si trova nel cosiddetto “gruppo di Chicago”, formato dal cattolico J. Maritain, dal protestante R.M. Hutchins, dall’ebreo M.J. Adler e da altri, autori nel 1951 di un progetto di costituzione mondiale. A conferma dell’interesse che la razionalità pratica di Aristotele suscita ancora oggi, il dossier che qui presentiamo contiene interventi di un ambasciatore, Roberto Rossi, di un ingegnere, Faber Fabbris, di un’insegnante di liceo, Silvia Gullino, e di uno studioso alle sue prime esperienze di insegnamento universitario, Luca Grecchi.
