The world-renowned Peruvian poet César Vallejo (1892-1938) was also a journalist, essayist, novelist and would-be dramatist. The study of his life and work has encountered problems since the 1950s, stemming from the fact that half of his writing was published posthumously under editorship of doubtful accuracy. The matter is further complicated in that his non-poetic work has been neglected in favour of his verse. A Struggle between Art and Politics reviews the evidence -- literary and historical -- now reliably to hand, and assesses the often conflicting body of opinion his work has generated. Three essential questions are pertinent: Where should Vallejo be placed in the canon of twentieth-century modernism? What effect did his mid-life conversion to Communism have on his writing? How should his prose fiction, journalism and essays be assessed in relation to his poetry? There are few writers whose literary output follows the twists and turns of their lives more closely than César Vallejo's. This new, comparative study maps his career onto the cultural, social, political and historical backdrop to his life in Peru, France, Spain and Russia, and analyses his writings in the light of his life circumstances. Vallejo's journey from Peru, the cultural "periphery", to the "centre" of inter-war Paris, his experience of European capitalism during the Depression, and the confrontation of Communism and Fascism, ultimately played out in the Spanish Civil War, forced him to wage a personal struggle to reconcile art with life and politics. This challenge is fought out in different ways in his various writings, but nowhere more movingly, passionately and humanely than in his posthumous poetry.

For hundreds of years, Barcelona and Madrid have shared a deep rivalry. Throughout history, they have competed in practically every aspect of social life, sport, politics, and culture. While competition between cities is commonplace in many nations around the world, in the case of Barcelona and Madrid it has been, on occasion, excessively antagonistic. Over time they have each tried to demonstrate that one was more modern than the other, or more avant-garde, or richer, or more athletic, and so on. Fortunately, the Spain of today is a democracy and every nation and region of the State has the liberty to act. As such, the rivalry between these two capitals has become productive not only for the cities themselves, but also for Spain as a whole. One hundred years ago, at the onset of the Historical Avant-Garde in Spain, the connections between Barcelona and Madrid consisted of a complicated web of politics, friendships, publications, and inter-art collaborations. Over the last century, the antagonistic relationship between these two cultural capitals has been dismissed as simply a fact of life and thereby scholars, for the most part, have focused only on Barcelona or Madrid when addressing this cultural moment. By delving deep into the myriad of cultural and political complexities that surround these two cities from the onset of Futurism (1909) to the arrival of Surrealism in Spain (1929), a complex social and cultural network is revealed. Networking between artists, poets, journalists and thinkers connected avant-garde Barcelona and Madrid, thereby creating synergy for this artistic and literary movement. In a hybrid, transdisciplarian, translingual and historical approach using a wide range of visual and textual artifacts, the complexity of interactions described here opens our imagination to new ways of thinking about culture.

Convergencias y divergencias ha procurado seguir las huellas de la propuesta de Octavio Paz: “ni la pluralidad de las lenguas ni la singularidad de las obras significa heterogenidad irreductible o confusión, sino lo contrario: un mundo de relaciones hecho de contradicciones y correspondencias, uniones y separaciones”. Su autor ha querido acercar los discursos poéticos provenientes del Budismo Zen y del surrealismo occidental, trazando así un puente “de contradicciones y correspondencias” que nos permite barrer los prejuicios de irreductibilidad que la distancia de estas literaturas pudieran presuponer. Para tal logro, el profesor Bahk se detiene en los principios filosóficos y literarios en que se asienta la poesía Zen y repasa las líneas maestras de la vanguardia europea para, a continuación, realizar un estudio comparatista entre ambas poéticas. Los dos últimos capítulos de esta obra están dedicados al estudio del surrealismo en el Japón y en Corea, y a la exposición de la modalidad española del surrealismo, a la que añade un análisis de la obra surrealista de Juan Larrea y Vicente Aleixandre. Este ensayo constituye una verdadera novedad en el campo de la literatura comparada por la escasez en nuestra lengua de los estudios comparatistas hispano-orientales.
